Ecclestone, of course, now had a direct contract with the FIA, and Mosley benefitted from a wedge that had been driven between Bernie and the teams. Mosley knew from the FISA/FOCA war that the teams could pose real problems if properly financed, and more and more manufacturers were headed into F1. Having sold his interest in the March team, Max worked with Bernie Ecclestone on the establishment of FOCA.

Ecclestone sold Chessington-based Brabham in 1988. Here, Max and Bernie talk with Frank Williams in the pits before the 1980 Monaco Grand Prix. Mosley pictured during the contentious 1994 season alongside another Ecclestone confederate, Flavio Briatore. Briatore and Ecclestone would go on to buy Championship football club Queens Park Rangers. Ecclestone now had everything in place for a flotation for his company but there were issues with the EU Competition Commission. Mosley then concentrated his formidable intellect and widespread contacts on solving the EU issue.

Having got nowhere with competition commissioner Karel van Miert, he had a bit of good luck when allegations of financial mismanagement saw the entire commission resign. Van Miert’s successor, Mario Monti (later the Italian prime minister), was much more amenable – as a boy he had held the trophy while his mother and father gave Juan Fangio a lift to Milan after he won the Italian GP .

. . Mosley wasted no time. He started negotiating with Ecclestone for a 100-year deal beyond the end of the one he had done to 2010. Many couldn’t grasp how this was possible, and indeed still can’t, when the European Union was previously having issues with deals done beyond three to five years! Apparently, it had something to do with it being regarded in law similarly to the way a very long lease is viewed – effectively an outright sale – even if the FIA had reversionary rights after the 100 years.

Mosley, unsurprisingly and possibly with tongue firmly in cheek, said: ‘I didn’t want to do this myself because I knew people would say I was too close to him. I asked four of the main club presidents to do it instead. It was a strong team and they finally agreed a price of $300m with Bernie.’

One of Mosley’s strongest suits was his continual emphasis on safety.

No triumph out of Senna tragedy Mosley sells F1 to sole bidder ‘You hit the wrong part of him, my friend!’ Dennis orders Coulthard to move over . . . again FIA hands Ferrari a lifeline . . . Index Picture credits OceanofPDF.com Foreword David Coulthard Formula 1 has been central to my life for almost as long as I can remember. It’s elite sport, of course, but it’s so much more than that.

It’s business, glamour, international travel, and some of the world’s top brains and most intensely competitive people all chasing a common goal. It’s unrelenting and ever-evolving, a pressure cooker environment with high rewards. There’s nowhere to hide, its performers judged every couple of weeks by the honesty of the stopwatch. Amid the world’s fastest-moving soap opera, controversy is never far from the surface. The off-track drama is often as compelling as the on-track action.

Whether it’s intra-team rivalry, safety, money, personal power politics or sometimes even tragedy, F1’s rich history has it all. I have been fortunate enough to be involved throughout my whole career and Tony even longer, so whether you’re a lifelong fan or a new convert, I hope you enjoy some of F1’s most famous or infamous moments contained in these pages. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction and F1s narrative is always fascinating – enjoy! In 2023, a whistleblower controversially accused the FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem of attempting to prevent the new Las Vegas circuit from being certified by the FIA.

It would have had a huge financial impact on organisers Liberty Media. Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche (centre) was caught up in Lewis Hamilton’s contract wrangles, while David Coulthard was asked to give away two GP wins to his teammate!

OceanofPDF.com Introduction “How can you spend 40-odd years of your life watching people drive round and round in circles?” It’s a question I was asked recently by a relative with no appreciation of Formula 1. There is so much more to motor racing than that. It is a microcosm of life, full of competition, invention and politics. Racing people are risk-takers, chancers, totally driven, often narcissistic and consumed by what they do.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
