I frowned at her, bending over to pick up the lipstick and put it back on the table. The little tabby gave me a look, then batted the lipstick again, making it roll off the edge of the table once more. \u201cMuesli! Stop it!\u201d I picked up the lipstick again, putting it on the other side of the table this time and out of her reach.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeeorrwww,\u201d said Muesli petulantly, turning to glare at the other side of the room where snuffling sounds could be heard coming from a cage tucked into the corner. I smiled to myself. So that was why she was in a temper! When I\u2019d finally got home from the Covered Market and introduced Muesli to Pricklebum, the little cat had not taken kindly to the suggestion of sharing her home with a houseguest.<\/p>\n

She had let me know in no uncertain terms all evening, stalking around with a scowl on her whiskered face and a hiss on her tongue. After examining the hedgehog suspiciously through the bars of the cage, she had proceeded to ignore him\u2014except to occasionally give him a glare when the sounds of him happily munching her cat biscuits got too loud for her liking. \u201cIt\u2019s only for a few days, Muesli,\u201d I promised her. \u201cHe\u2019s not moving in with us permanently.\u201d \u201cMeorrw!\u201d Muesli shot the hedgehog cage another dirty look, then jumped off the dressing table and stalked from the bedroom, the tip of her tail twitching.<\/p>\n

I hastily finished getting ready, then scooped up Muesli, put her in her cat carrier, and set off. A short while later, I found myself pacing the hallway in my parents\u2019 house as I waited for Devlin to arrive, hoping nervously that he wouldn\u2019t be late. According to my mother, tardiness was the eighth deadly sin.<\/p>\n

Devlin was normally very punctual but I knew that sometimes work could delay him. The bell rang and I sprang forwards to open the door, then fell back in dismay as I saw who was standing on the threshold. It was Lincoln Green and his mother, Helen. \u201cLincoln! Er\u2026 Aunt Helen\u2026\u201d I greeted them in surprise. \u201cYour mother invited us around to dinner this evening,\u201d Lincoln explained, looking very embarrassed. He darted a look at his mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026 I thought it would be better if we came another time but\u2026 Mum insisted.\u201d \u201cHello, Gemma,\u201d said Helen Green in a cool tone, her manner very stiff.<\/p>\n

Business is going well at Gemma Rose\u2019s quaint English teashop and she\u2019s delighted about her first big catering job at a local village funeral\u2026 until the day ends with a second body and one of the Old Biddies accused of murder! Now the resourceful tearoom sleuth must find out which delicious pudding contained the deadly arsenic\u2014and who might have wanted the wealthy widow dead\u2026<\/p>\n

But Gemma has other troubles to contend with, from her naughty cat, Muesli, running loose in her tearoom to an unexpected hedgehog guest in her home\u2014and that\u2019s before the all-important \u201cmeet the parents\u201d dinner with her handsome detective boyfriend turns into a total disaster!
