\u201cThere is no need to explain,\u201d he replied. \u201cI told you then as I said today, I will never pressure you into anything, whether that me a betrothal or sampling a bite of snail.\u201d She laughed, but it held no depth. \u201cYes, I very much appreciate that, though I wanted you to know that what Gregory and I shared, no matter how brief our marriage lasted, was real.<\/p>\n

Deep. A love like that only comes once in a lifetime.\u201d A love he could have shared with Lettie, except he\u2019d been a fool. He\u2019d allowed distance between them, bottled his emotional state, and caused her to run into the arms of another man. A man who\u2019d been more than willing to give her the love and attention she deserved. A love that Daniel hadn\u2019t been capable of then. \u201cI plan to hold that love close, for it must last the rest of my days.\u201d<\/p>\n

She placed her hand on her heart, and her eyes drifted shut for a brief moment. Daniel wondered who she saw when she did, but her next words made it all clear. \u201cIt was you who allowed me to experience true love and passion. And for that, I will always be grateful.\u201d Lettie only saw Gregory. A war hero.<\/p>\n

Daniel brushed his knuckles against his palm as he glanced down at his attire and hastily smoothed his hands over his rumpled coat. The movement caused him to sway slightly as he steadied his stance. \u201cHiccup.\u201d Blast it all, but he despised ending his afternoon entertainments early to accompany Lady Lettie to yet another overly crowded ball, only to stand forgotten while she spoke, laughed, and danced late into the night. He\u2019d done his best to avoid several afternoon entertainments over the last fortnight, including a garden party and a musicale recital.<\/p>\n

The woman was his betrothed. She should, at the very least, see to him before wandering off to socialize with the other debutantes making their grand coming out in London. It was exceedingly possible Lettie wouldn\u2019t notice his less than proper garb or his tardy arrival. Thump, thump, thump. He pounded the door once more as a resounding pain moved from his clenched fist and up his arm to settle in his stiff shoulder.<\/p>\n
