\u201cWe\u2019ve got a couple of hours before everything shuts up,\u201d Dot said. \u201cWhere should we go first, Mrs. Silverman?\u201d \u201cThere\u2019s a nice museum, and the church is very interesting,\u201d she said. \u201cOr you could just wander where the fancy takes you. Plenty of lovely old houses and public buildings. You could go on the steam railway tomorrow.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re a very historic town, you know. Here,\u201d she added, going to a table in the corner of the lounge, \u201chere\u2019s a few leaflets to help you choose. You\u2019re not here for long, so you\u2019ll not want to waste your time.\u201d Dot and Lois glanced through the leaflets. Dot said she\u2019d like to see round the shops, and Lois said perhaps they could have a quick look in the church first.<\/p>\n

She was aware that this was supposed to be a treat for Dot, but wherever she went, she loved to look at the church and its surrounding graveyard, feeling closer to the people and their lives and deaths than in a carefully planned museum. She was also aware that few people shared her enthusiasm. \u201cThe church?\u201d said Dot unbelievingly. \u201cWhat d\u2019you want to see that for? One church is much like another, Mrs. M. No, you come along with me, and we\u2019ll explore. I expect we\u2019ll be going up to them moors tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n

She winked at Lois, who said they\u2019d have to see what the weather was like. \u201cAnyway,\u201d she said, shepherding Dot towards the front door, \u201clet\u2019s get going.<\/p>\n
