Be prepared to have a handout ready for a patient to review after the appointment. This can be helpful when a patient is in the preparation or action stage of change. Handouts vetted and created by health organizations to be patient-friendly and easily understood, including the ones discussed in Table 7.2, can provide important information as patients prepare to make changes and need reliable information.

Table 7.2 Examples of websites with handouts that can provide useful information for clients⏎ Name Organization CardioSmart American College of Cardiology https://www.cardiosmart.org/ Healthy Eating American Heart Association https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-eating Heart Healthy Toolbox Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association https://pcna.net/clinical-resources/patient-handouts/heart-healthy- toolbox/ Diabetes Plate American Diabetes Association https://www.diabetesfoodhub.org/articles/what-is-the-diabetes-plate- method.html Cultural Considerations and Mindfulness of Social Context Cultural humility in efforts to improve the nutrition of patients is often underappreciated, but it is a critical component of dietary counseling.

Incorporating cultural humility involves self-evaluation and critical awareness of biases while maintaining openness for learning, communicating, offering help, and making clinical decisions with patients (National Association of Social Workers n.d.; Tervalon and Murray-García 1998). No matter the background of a patient, it is vital to consider and discuss how the principles of the diets mentioned earlier can be adapted to their own culture or family. Research suggests that culturally tailored nutrition counseling can improve diet quality (Hammons et al. 2019). A central start to this approach is not making assumptions, being curious, and encouraging the patient to be curious about their background and the significant foods in their culture/subculture.

Have discussions about how cultural beliefs and practices influence their diet. In addition to encouraging open dialogue, offer culturally appropriate nutrition information resources that they can explore. Furthermore, beyond integrating cultural considerations into nutrition education, it is imperative to be attentive to patients’ social contexts, such as their health-related social needs profile and interpersonal and community networks.

Note: The authors have worked to ensure that all information in this book is accurate at the time of publication and consistent with general psychiatric and medical standards, and that information concerning drug dosages, schedules, and routes of administration is accurate at the time of publication and consistent with standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the general medical community.
