It\u2019ll be relaxing and fun.\u201d Bridget still suspected that Janet had ulterior motives, but it did sound like a nice evening, and she didn\u2019t have any other plans tonight. \u201cFine,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll want to go home and change after work, though.<\/p>\n

These shoes aren\u2019t the best for walking in the snow.\u201d \u201cI\u2019ll do the same,\u201d Janet said. \u201cWe can carpool if you want. More specifically, she couldn\u2019t stop thinking about what Janet had said about him. The worst part was that she wanted to believe her friend. Of course she did.<\/p>\n

Lachlan seemed like pretty much any woman\u2019s dream guy, and it wasn\u2019t just that he was attractive. They got along well and she enjoyed spending time with him and thought he did with her too, even if it was platonically. She almost wished she hadn\u2019t agreed to go to Mill Creek Lumber that evening, because she wasn\u2019t sure she wanted to risk running into Lachlan there.<\/p>\n

It would be awkward now that Janet had put those thoughts in her head, and worse, she was worried he might think she was stalking him. She had already committed, though, and normally she wouldn\u2019t think twice about it, so she decided to try not to worry about it. She texted him a heartfelt thank you for the sandwich because that was only polite but didn\u2019t keep the thread going when he replied. She wasn\u2019t trying to ignore him on purpose; she just needed more time to think. The day wasn\u2019t a particularly busy one, but what customers they had all wanted to ask about Todd\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

News had spread fast, and there was something about being found dead in a fridge that seemed to resonate with people in a strange way. It was a relief to finally lock the store up for the evening and head home, where she went directly upstairs to change and put on some better cold-weather gear. Janet was right that it was beginning to warm up, but in late February, that meant it was in the high twenties and low thirties, which was still far from warm.<\/p>\n

She was standing on the small landing just outside her door, locking the deadbolt, when she heard someone slow on the street and the crunch of tires on frozen gravel. Turning, she spotted an unfamiliar sedan parked in her driveway. She tucked her keys into her purse and started down the wooden steps.<\/p>\n

By the time she reached the bottom, the driver had gotten out. It was Jamie Mulder. She wasn\u2019t sure who she was expecting to see, but it definitely wasn\u2019t him. He gave her an awkward wave.<\/p>\n

There was something disconcerting about seeing a matinee. Four dollars for popcorn feels like a steal.\u201d \u201cI still don\u2019t understand why it\u2019s called Lakeview Theater,\u201d Bridget said, turning her back to the wind. She made a point of looking around, then added, \u201cThe lake definitely isn\u2019t in view.\u201d \u201cBeats me,\u201d Miranda said as they began walking again. \u201cMichelle, you\u2019ve lived here the longest.<\/p>\n

Do you have any idea why it\u2019s called Lakeview? Was it part of a chain?\u201d \u201cI have no idea,\u201d Michelle admitted. \u201cI\u2019ve never thought about it before. They probably just thought it sounded nice. I don\u2019t think people always put much thought into what they name something. Like your aunt\u2019s store, Bridget. Why did she name it Nightsmith Novelties?<\/p>\n

She probably just thought it sounded spooky or intriguing.\u201d \u201cHer last name\u2019s Nachtschmidt,\u201d Bridget explained. \u201cIt means Nightsmith in German. I haven\u2019t asked her, but my guess is she thought the German word would be too much of a mouthful.\u201d \u201cHuh,\u201d Michelle said. \u201cI never knew that.\u201d \u201cI didn\u2019t either,\u201d Miranda admitted. \u201cI mean, I knew what your aunt\u2019s last name was, but I never put it together that the store\u2019s name is the English version of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
