Men who did not grow up subject to her fallen state, who were not nurtured in the ruins of her ideals.\u201d \u201cWhat trouble is there?\u201d George asked him. \u201cAre we at war again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Hancock said without hesitation. \u201cWe are at war for our nation\u2019s soul.\u201d \u201cSome of what you boys have been taught is not the whole truth,\u201d Mother said, reaching out her hand across the table to put it on top of Tom\u2019s. \u201cI would never have lied to you if it was not required of me by God and country,\u201d she said, impassioned.<\/p>\n<p>Her cheeks were rosy. \u201cI hope that you believe me about that.\u201d Ben\u2019s face was avid. \u201cTom\u2019s right, isn\u2019t he? Ptolemy is right. We are not living in the year 1750.\u201d \u201cWe have a right to the truth,\u201d George said gently. \u201cAt least give us that.\u201d \u201cAt least stop insulting our intelligence,\u201d Tom said. \u201cWe know several things we have been told are lies.<\/p>\n<p>Basic premises about our existence seem incompatible with reality.\u201d \u201cEverything,\u201d John said. \u201cWe need to know everything.\u201d \u201cJohn,\u201d Ben said quietly. \u201cPatience.\u201d \u201cOne thing at a time,\u201d Hancock said. \u201cYes,\u201d Tom agreed, nodding. \u201cOne thing. The thing we asked about is the calendar.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s . . . not the best place to start,\u201d Hancock said with some difficulty. \u201cPerhaps we should start with our mother\u2019s past liaisons with men who were not her husband,\u201d John said, his voice a bit too loud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn!\u201d Mother\u2019s voice was like a slap. \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d \u201cYes, John,\u201d Ben said through gritted teeth. \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d John pushed back from the table and stood up out of his chair. \u201cI am tired of this charade.
