Celeste was getting to know Luc and they were becoming firm friends. He didn\u2019t spoil her with endless presents, but always brought something he thought she might like. He handed a selection of fruit over to Nathalie for everyone to enjoy, which meant that Celeste got her first taste of sweet apricots.<\/p>\n

And he always had something in his pocket, like the bubble- blowing kit, which he entrusted to Henri\u2019s care as they all sat in the garden together. But Monday was going to be for just the three of them. Luc arrived at eight in the morning, and he and Nathalie swapped car keys. \u2018I have the convertible, Henri!\u2019 Nathalie danced around the kitchen. \u2018And I may not give it back…\u2019 Luc chuckled at her delight. He had Nathalie\u2019s compact SUV, which had a child seat and a boot roomy enough for a folded pushchair, and clearly felt he\u2019d done better from the bargain.<\/p>\n

As soon as they entered the zoo, Celeste was in explorer mode, stretching in the pushchair to see around her. Luc was looking down at her, his brow creased. \u2018May I take her out of the pushchair and carry her? She\u2019ll be able to see better.\u2019 \u2018Why don\u2019t you ask her?\u2019 He smiled, squatting down next to the pushchair and leaning forward.<\/p>\n

\u2018How do you feel about biodiversity and animal welfare, Celeste?\u2019 Celeste wriggled in her pushchair holding her arms out towards him, and Luc grinned. \u2018Okay. We\u2019ll talk about that a bit more later.\u2019 He loosened the harness, lifting her up in his arms, and Celeste babbled with joy, twisting around to take everything in. \u2018How do you feel about a baby carrier?\u2019<\/p>\n

Luc was going to get an elbow in the eye any minute now. \u2018Shouldn\u2019t you ask her?\u2019 He grinned, jiggling Celeste up and down to calm her. \u2018No, it\u2019s your decision whether you think you can carry a wriggling toddler around all morning. It\u2019s not bright pink, by the way…\u2019 \u2018Shame. Although that does sound like a plan.\u2019 Luc submitted to the process of loosening and tightening straps, until Celeste was secured firmly to his chest in the carrier, still waving her arms and pointing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour French has improved since I saw you last.\u201d \u201cWhen I knew I was coming here, I got an app that\u2019s supposed to teach you French in 90 days. That gave me the basics, but actually watching a French cop show on TV with the subtitles on was pretty useful.\u201d Luc chuckled. \u201cYeah, I can see that.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing like hearing a language spoken to become fluent. So you could arrest me in French, if you put your mind to it?\u201d Pearl couldn\u2019t help laughing. However hard she tried to fight it, Luc was the nicest guy she\u2019d ever met. And if he wasn\u2019t thinking about what they might do together with a pair of handcuffs… This would ease. She\u2019d be able to look at him without her thoughts melting into a sweet mess of memories of what Luc could do to her, and what she\u2019d done to him.<\/p>\n

Maybe it\u2019s somewhere we can return to, or perhaps it only lives on in our memories. But it\u2019s there, waiting for us when we want it. Because another thing about a Happy Place is that it needn\u2019t be grand or even beautiful, and there are no explanations needed.<\/p>\n

It just is for reasons that belong to us alone. Luc and Pearl each have their Happy Places, which have become unusually important to them.
