Mateo stood in the hallway, his hands held up in surrender while a woman in a pantsuit pointed a can of mace right in his face. The woman whipped toward me when I opened the door, redirecting her aim. \u201cI\u2019m armed and I\u2019ll take down both you motherfuckers,\u201d she spat.<\/p>\n

I raised my hands in surrender as well, eyes wide. What the fuck? The crazed woman spotted Violet behind me, and her shoulders sagged. \u201cOh my god, I thought something happened!\u201d She rushed to Violet and gathered her in a hug, then pulled away. \u201cYou know these guys?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d Violet patted her shoulder. \u201cPut the mace away, they\u2019re helping me.\u201d She still looked furious, but she pocketed the mace and looked back and forth between us.<\/p>\n

Mateo and I both slowly lowered our hands. He shot me a wide-eyed glance from behind her like Who is this psycho? \u201cLina, this is Ethan,\u201d Violet said in a soothing tone. \u201cEthan, this is my roommate Lina.\u201d Roommate? Ah, okay, things were making more sense now. \u201cYou\u2019re Ethan?\u201d Lina blushed crimson red. \u201cOh crap, I\u2019m so sorry, I had no idea\u2026\u201d She turned to Violet and stage-whispered out of the corner of her mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d \u201cI was mugged\u2014\u201c Violet started. Lina\u2019s sharp inhale cut her off. \u201cBut I\u2019m fine now,\u201d she continued. \u201cThey made sure I got home safely, that\u2019s all.\u201d Violet shot me a glance over Lina\u2019s shoulder, telling me she didn\u2019t want to go into details. \u201cSo who\u2019s the neanderthal in the hallway?\u201d Lina asked. \u201cI\u2019m right here,\u201d Mateo said dryly, still standing by the open door.<\/p>\n

Lina ignored him. \u201cThat\u2019s my friend Mateo,\u201d I chimed in to take some heat off Violet. \u201cI\u2019m really sorry for the confusion. We\u2019re just making sure everyone\u2019s safe.\u201d Lina narrowed her eyes. \u201cComing home to a random hulk outside my door doesn\u2019t exactly feel safe.\u201d \u201cSeriously?\u201d Mateo muttered. Violet rubbed Lina\u2019s shoulder. \u201cHey, why don\u2019t you go take a shower? Wash off work. We can talk about it later.\u201d Lina tipped her chin and looked over at me, hand held out.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan, it\u2019s really nice to meet you. I\u2019m so happy you\u2019re here.\u201d She dropped the smile and shot a glare in Mateo\u2019s direction before walking into the hallway. \u201cWhat\u2019s her problem?\u201d Mateo growled as soon as she was gone. \u201cShe just got scared, that\u2019s all,\u201d Violet told him. \u201cShe\u2019s usually much friendlier.\u201d Mateo rolled his eyes, then left, closing the door behind him.<\/p>\n

Violet went to change, leaving me alone in the living room, where I pondered how two women could live in this barren space.<\/p>\n

I looked every part the management consultant in a tailored Armani suit and silk Carolina Herrera blouse, my hair in a tight French twist. But I was dressed for one audience only\u2014the Epix board of directors. My pulse thrummed in beat with the house music as I scanned the crowd for Damian Price, a partner from my consulting firm.<\/p>\n
