TUESDAY On our botany strand on Gardeners’ World on May 29 about seed (it’s on iPlayer), I sowed a half-tray of love-in-a-mist seed. It’s germinated, made true leaves and been pricked out now. Later it will go in our blue and yellow garden. WEDNESDAY The damage roe deer have done to some perennials and roses could make me cry. They seem to find astilbes, hostas, asters and roses particularly tasty; not one astilbe bud left.

They’ve avoided actaea and all ranunculaceae, but I can hardly plant buttercups galore. THURSDAY Despite late autumn pruning on Vitis coignetiae, it has once again climbed up into other plants and crossed the track. We’ll just have to enjoy the contrast between its huge leaves and much daintier ones. FRIDAY In September I saw that the seed on several of our eryngium seedheads was sprouting (viviparous germination).

I took it off carefully and both my daughter Annie and I ‘sowed’ it into compost. In my tray they haven’t done well but Annie’s are thriving. SATURDAY One rose the deer haven’t eaten is our giant ‘Paul’s Himalayan Musk’ hich i lowerin abundantly, climbing high into a different copper beech, and our Cornus controversa ‘Variegata’. Its flowering is all too brief here it creates cascades of pink among the trees.

SUNDAY Today, whatever the weather, I’m just going to ignore negatives and damage and enjoy the garden, hopefully with some of my family. Hope you can do the same. one of the most widely grown of all our daisies. It became a showman’s plant, but nowadays has had a renaissance as modern (and some older) varieties, mainly singles, have been introduced.
