OceanofPDF.com CHAPTER 1 The lemonade vibrated in the glass sitting on the arm of the chair. Steven stared at it a few seconds without understanding the cause of the unusual movement. It reminded him of the pools of water which trembled just before the great tyrannosaurus appeared in the movie Jurassic Park.

The picture frames began to rattle violently on the walls. He looked around the room trying to figure out what was happening. Then he realized it was nothing more than a small earthquake, similar to the one he had felt in California while visiting his sister and her husband the summer before. Still Steven was surprised. He had lived in Provo all his life and couldn’t remember experiencing a single earthquake.

His three children, who had been playing Parcheesi on the kitchen table, rushed into the living room, eyes wide with excitement. First Andrew, then William and Jennifer. “Dad, did you feel that?” Andrew said with a mixture of fear and enthusiasm. William rolled his clear blue eyes and smacked his lips at the obvious naivety of his eight-year-old brother. “Of course he felt it, stupid, what do you think?”

At twelve years old, William loved to set his younger brother and sister straight. He was into disaster movies and was constantly trying to convince his father to let him see them on television and at the local movie theater. William pushed past Andrew and came to his father’s chair. “Hey, Dad, do you think there’s going to be a bigger one in a little while?”

he said hopefully. “I don’t know. I suppose we might get some aftershocks. William, please don’t call your brother stupid.” William ignored his father’s reprimand. “Gosh.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
