Luca said. \u201cThat\u2019s right. It was made by the California Highway Patrol and they\u2019d taken actual movies of bloody accident scenes.\u201d \u201cYeah, that\u2019s the one. There was one crash where a girl had been thrown out of the car and run over and then her body was propped up against a wheel well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes! The one where she was headless?\u201d \u201cI think her head was still attached but it was stuffed up underneath the fender,\u201d Kane said. \u201cWhere\u2019d Thelma get it? I thought those films were only sold to schools.\u201d \u201cShe and her daughter had a driver\u2019s training business forever, remember?\u201d \u201cOh yeah. Well, that makes more sense.\u201d \u201cShe set up an old projector in her living room and pulled out film reels to play the old movie. I think she\u2019d probably shown it a hundred times or more but I was transfixed to the screen.<\/p>\n

So much blood,\u201d Luca said, shuddering. \u201cWell, now I\u2019m really ready to eat, Luca. Thanks for that memory,\u201d Kane said. Luca was still laughing as he got into the left turn lane to pull onto a side street where Barney\u2019s Beanery was located. After appetizers of fried pickles with ranch dressing and potato skins with all the toppings, Kane ordered a Barney\u2019s favorite of barbeque pork sandwiches for them, topping their meal off with \u201croast your own s\u2019mores\u201d that they made right at the table.<\/p>\n

By the time they finished dinner, Luca asked Kane just to roll him out to the car. He was stuffed and he groaned loudly as he flopped down on the seat behind the wheel. When Kane chuckled, Luca looked over at him and gave him the stink eye. \u201cWhat the fuck are you looking at?\u201d Kane outright laughed. \u201cYou, Luca.<\/p>\n

Did you eat too much?\u201d \u201cI love food but that was seriously overdoing it. I can\u2019t believe you ordered dessert after everything we ate for dinner.\u201d Kane chuckled again. \u201cAnd I\u2019m to blame, how? You didn\u2019t have to eat it.\u201d Luca pinned him with a narrow gaze. \u201cI don\u2019t waste food. I just can\u2019t do that. I guess it\u2019s because for so many years, me, my mom, and Lucie almost went hungry\u2014I don\u2019t know. I just don\u2019t waste anything. Haven\u2019t you noticed that I never leave a restaurant with a full plate?<\/p>\n

If I can\u2019t finish it, I take it home in a doggy bag, even if it\u2019s three or four French fries.\u201d<\/p>\n
