It\u2019s the self-defense version of a mic drop: no extra words, no apologies, just truth, volume, and boundaries delivered with clarity and control. Verbal force might sound like: \u201cBack off. I said no.\u201d \u201cStep away from me.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t know you. Leave me alone.\u201d \u201cStop touching me.\u201d Verbal force is especially useful when\u2026 You\u2019re in a public or semipublic space where others can witness or help. Someone is pushing past your verbal boundaries. You need to interrupt escalating behavior or buy time to exit.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve already tried deescalation and it didn\u2019t work. Verbal force is not helpful when\u2026 The person has a weapon and you\u2019re isolated. You\u2019re physically restrained or cornered with no safe exit. You\u2019re in a coercive, long-term abusive situation. Your body is in a freeze response and speech isn\u2019t accessible.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most effective verbal force tools is what I call \u201cname-and- claim.\u201d This tactic is all about being specific. You name exactly what is happening, who is doing it, and what you need, and you say it out loud, clearly, and without hesitation. The goal is twofold: first, to make the aggressor visible and accountable, and second, to activate bystanders who may be unsure or frozen.<\/p>\n<p>When people hear something specific, like what behavior is happening and who it\u2019s coming from, they\u2019re far more likely to step in. Here\u2019s what name-and-claim sounds like in action. Let\u2019s say you\u2019re on the subway and someone touches you inappropriately. Instead of just saying \u201cCan you please stop,\u201d which could be brushed off or ignored, you say, \u201cPerson in the red shirt, get your hand off me.<\/p>\n<p>I do not know you.\u201d Then you shift to others around you: \u201cPerson in the pink shirt, can you help me? I need help now.\u201d You\u2019ve just done three things: named the harm, claimed your right to safety, and pulled someone into a position of support. This tactic is especially useful in public or semipublic places, such as a bus, a sidewalk, or a party, where there are people around but the social dynamics might still keep them silent.<\/p>\n<p>Name-and-claim cuts through that silence.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A Note to Readers: This book discusses experiences of violence, including assault and harassment.
