He really had no reason to complain. He was alive; he had more than enough money; he had his own business; and he owned his house, sort of, maybe his house owned him; it was confusing either way. But Nefeli didn’t have anything except for a hundred and eight ghosts that she couldn’t even see. Tucker and Nefeli stayed in the park for a long time, but neither of them spoke.<\/p>\n

Either they had nothing left to say or they couldn’t bear the thought of saying what they did have. Tucker was the one to break the silence. “I’m beat,” he said with a yawn. “I guess I’ll go ho\u2014” He sighed. “Never mind; I guess I’ll go to the Graves. What will you do?” He still didn’t want her anywhere near them. It seemed insane, but he felt that the Graves were too fragile. Some might say that Nefeli was also fragile, but she wasn’t; she was brittle.<\/p>\n

There was a difference there; Tucker was just too tired to know what it was. “I will stay here,” Nefeli eventually stated. He might have argued with anyone else, but he wasn’t worried about her. Who would worry about a woman who was over three thousand years old? She clearly knew how to protect herself. “Meet me at my house tomorrow,” Tucker said. “Around ten. Apollo probably won’t let us in, but maybe he’ll talk to one of your ghosts.<\/p>\n

I need to hear from them that they want to leave you.” “And if they don’t?” Nefeli demanded. “It’s not like I can make them,” Tucker retorted. “And I wouldn’t even if I could.” “Just like Doc, your nonsensical morality gets in the way,” she snarled. “It’s not about morality,” Tucker protested.<\/p>\n

“What is it about?” He was too tired for this conversation, but he gave it a shot anyway. “D-Dog once explained to me that there is more than one kind of\u2026 rape,” Tucker said. He didn’t want to talk about this, but he needed her to understand. “There’s um\u2026 like, sexual rape,” he nearly whispered, “physical rape, and mental rape.” “Your point?” she ground out. “The first one is sorta self-explanatory,” he said. “But D-Dog says that whenever someone strips away your choice, it’s rape.<\/p>\n

So maybe you want your ghosts to go, but if they don’t want to, I’m not gonna make ’em. They aren’t just wisps of air or thoughts. They’re actual souls, actual people just without the body. There are a hundred and eight people connected to you. And they love you. I’m happy to help them move on, but only if they want to.”<\/p>\n

He felt a burst of anger from her, and he knew she was furious. Fear filled him as he wondered what she would do if he didn’t help her.<\/p>\n
