Having traveled past Wynn’s white light of the first octave, we now continue the journey through the Underworld. In the north, the path begins with Hel as the ninth rune. The number placement of each letter hides the marks, the footprints of an ancient path out of Africa. We must follow carefully if we are to understand the secrets of runes.

Modern scholars, distancing themselves from the excesses of earlier generations reincarnating as pharaohs and noble Trojans, have not bothered to learn the alchemy, the astronomy, and the number magic empowering earlier scholars discussing their Mysteries. This is a liability in uncovering their secrets. OceanofPDF.com 9. Nonetheless, Hel still rules the second group of the aettir. Hel is the aging Hag of the north whose womb welcomes the seed of her dying children to await their return to the light. Describing a rune list whose Hag rune is glossed with letter A, René Derolez notes that of all the glossed runes only the Hag’s rune is capitalized: “I admit there is no reason to have a capital H here.”1 A woman’s womb shaped like letter A, the capital seems to imply respect due the black goddess.

“With this work, Judith Dillon brings us on a fascinating journey through the history of the Norse runes. The mystery and sacredness of this ancient written language are combined with linguistic and ethnographic science to render a fascinating account of the symbols’ origins, evolution, and uses.

Treating runic marks as paradigmatic examples of what Descartes called ‘signs,’ Dillon establishes the runes as the bones of a primal alphabet and symbolic system, locating the signs and their meanings securely within the Cartesian context of ‘magically’ productive, generative language—symbol systems that generate other varieties of thoughts, such as music and mathematics, art, and mystical divination.” Yvonne Owens, Ph.D., past research fellow at the University College of London, professor emerita of art history and critical studies, and coauthor of The Witch’s Book of Days OceanofPDF.com OceanofPDF.com 📩 Thank you for selecting this Inner Traditions eBook!

Enjoy 25% off your next purchase when you join our community.
