Maybe it’s not Valentine’s Day I’m actually avoiding. Maybe I’m not afraid of love. Maybe I’m afraid I’m not capable of it. That there’s something fundamentally broken in me that makes me unlovable, un-choosable, the person everyone leaves eventually.

Maybe that’s why I keep everyone at arm’s length with sarcasm and eye rolls. Safer that way. I set the empty bowl on the night stand and close my eyes, letting the Netflix episode play on mute, washing over me in silent, judgmental waves. Monday mornings in Ashen Mills don’t move fast. The town wakes slow—coffee first, conversation second. By eight, Main Street’s alive with shop doors opening, old truck engines, the steady hum of normal. I’m parked at the corner by the pharmacy, finishing my second coffee, watching the world wake up.

Dispatch crackles. “Unit three, check on a noise complaint on Willow Street.” I sigh, tossing my cup. “Ten-four. On my way.” The “noise complaint” is a grown man practicing drums in his garage. More enthusiasm than skill. His wife apologizes before I fully exit the cruiser. The man looks like he wants to vanish. Next call’s a loose dog—Biscuit the golden retriever, third escape this month.

I find him two blocks away, investigating trash cans. He comes when called, tail wagging, completely unrepentant. After that, a stalled car near the diner. Dead battery. I help jump it, make sure she’s good, wave off her tip attempt. Nothing dramatic. Nothing dangerous. Just small-town maintenance—the kind that used to sound boring and now feels grounding. Important in a different way. Still, by shift’s end at five, the day feels heavier than it should.

Maybe it’s the quiet. Maybe it’s that everyone I talked to had someone waiting at home. And I’ve got an empty bungalow and a fridge full of leftovers. By six, I’m home. Small but mine, clean and quiet, exactly as I left it. I drop my badge on the counter, toe off boots, open the fridge to survey options. Leftovers or takeout. Again. I grab the meatloaf, heat it in the microwave, then eat standing at the counter while staring out the window.

I finish eating, rinse the dish, migrate to the couch. I flip on the TV more for noise than anything. Some basketball game hums background. I’m not watching. My phone’s on the coffee table, screen dark. I keep glancing at it like it might spontaneously do something interesting.

I tell myself I’m checking for dispatch updates. But if I’m honest, I’m half hoping for a text from Gabby.

Cover Design by Amber Nicole Gabby Wallace Skips Valentine’s Day is a work of fiction. My headlights catch the road sign, reflective letters glowing like they’re personally mocking me.

I almost laugh. Ten miles from the town I swore I’d never return to. One year in the city, and what do I have to show for it? A box of office supplies from the marketing firm that laid me off—budget cuts, they said. And friends who are all madly in love, paired off like Noah’s ark, planning Valentine’s surprises while I pretend to care whether red roses are too cliché.

Gag. Valentine’s Day is in two weeks, and I’ve made it my mission to skip it entirely. No chocolate, no roses, no pitying looks. Just me, my childhood bedroom, my parents’ couch, Netflix, and a gallon of cookie dough ice cream. The plan? Hide from the world. Maybe cry. Avoid Mom’s questions about my “future.”

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
