Encyclopedia and his junior partner, Sally Kimball, were playing catch in the side yard. Sally was working on her curveball till a customer arrived. \u201cIf I\u2019m going to win games this summer,\u201d said Sally, \u201cI need to have more than one pitch.\u201d \u201cAre you sure?\u201d said Encyclopedia. \u201cNobody seems to have much luck against your fastball.\u201d \u201cTrue,\u201d Sally admitted. \u201cBut if the batters wise up to the fact that that\u2019s all I have got, sooner or later they\u2019ll be pounding out hits.\u201d \u201cI\u2019d say later,\u201d said Chip Caswell, riding up on his bike.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it happens, I\u2019ll try to get a few balls to add to my collection.\u201d Nobody liked to collect baseball souvenirs more than Chip Caswell. He saved the ticket stubs from every game he\u2019d ever been to. His baseball cards filled six shoe boxes. He might have had even more if his parents hadn\u2019t complained that his hobby was taking over his room. He had collected signed balls, bats, cards, and caps from teams all over the country. \u201cDid you hear the news?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes it have something to do with baseball?\u201d asked Encyclopedia. \u201cI\u2019ll say. There\u2019s a new sports museum opening up in Idaville, and they\u2019ve offered a spot in the main hall for a kid to donate something,\u201d Chip said. \u201cAnd you\u2019re ready to give?\u201d asked Encyclopedia. \u201cSure. If they pick something of yours, you get to have your name on a plaque for everyone to see.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s pretty exciting,\u201d said Sally.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut why do you need us?\u201d \u201cThe museum has put out a notice saying they will be examining donations at noon today. I figure there will be a long line of kids with stuff to donate. I want you to see what they have, and then tell me which of these I need to offer to make sure my donation gets picked,\u201d Chip said. Encyclopedia looked at his watch. \u201cIt\u2019s eleven thirty now.<\/p>\n

I guess we\u2019d better get going.\u201d When they arrived at the museum, they got a surprise. There was no long line of kids. Only one person was standing there\u2014Sammy Jackson. He was one of Bugs Meany\u2019s Tigers. They were so slippery, the truth wouldn\u2019t stick to them if you pasted it on with a bucket of glue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s the line?\u201d asked Chip. Sammy smiled at him. \u201cYou\u2019re looking at it.\u201d Chip shook his head. \u201cI can\u2019t believe nobody else came.\u201d \u201cOh, they came,\u201d said Sammy, \u201cand then they left.\u201d \u201cWhy would they do that?\u201d Encyclopedia asked. \u201cCouldn\u2019t take the competition,\u201d Sammy explained. \u201cOnce they saw what I was offering, they just disappeared.\u201d \u201cAnd what have you got?\u201d<\/p>\n

Chip asked. Sammy smiled. He took out a box and removed the lid. A baseball was sitting inside on a velvet base.<\/p>\n
