Brightness in the gloom espite the rain, January was productive. We pruned the climbing roses and the climbers on the perimeter fences. The battered ornamental grasses and remaining perennials were cut back and the borders were spread with manure mulch.

The tubs on the roof terrace were topped up with compost too; there’s so much soil erosion in this exposed position. To keep my spirits up, I hung some extra feeders full of peanuts and mealworms, which attracted the parakeets and starlings, as well as a nuthatch and of course the squirrels! These feeders are well away from the permanent feeders so as not to deter the small birds. I can watch from the greenhouse, not even 2m away. Consequently, the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch was a roaring success! David has designed and built some new bird feeders and bug hotels as well.

The Catio is so sheltered that the tree fern didn’t need protecting. All the pots of cannas and ginger lilies have the old foliage left on until temperatures rise. There are violas, heucheras, ajuga, evergreen ferns, nandinas and fatsias. Lovely for a coffee on sunny mornings. The front garden looks a bit bedraggled, as the Melianthus major was struck down in the January cold snap. It’s alive but in March will be pruned to ground level to encourage the new growth at its base. Coloured dogwoods brighten up the gloom.

Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ and ‘Irene Paterson’, honey spurge and the maroon stems of t’s good to have colour in the garden to cheer up some of the dull days we’ve had. Cyclamen in a wall hanger near the kitchen door do just that. They also naturalise well. Even though the garden has had its fair share of rain, plants are awakening and bulbs are pushing through soggy soil.

Snowdrops always berberis add structure and colour. The shady corner under the apple tree looks great all year round: variegated griselinia and mahonia ‘Soft Caress’, underplanted with colourful heucheras, ferns and grasses. The low boughs of the ancient lilac are underplanted with Corsican hellebores, black grass and ferns in the shady garden. Snowdrops and crocus are appearing, pink hellebore hybrids add colour and sorbaria ‘Sem’ has starry new shoots.

Hurry off er ends March 17th Everything you need to make your beds, borders, hanging baskets and patio containers look amazing this year!
