I\u2019m determined to plant them out promptly when they reach pencil thickness. We have leeks from last year\u2019s sowing in the garden now, but they\u2019re very slim! I planted them out too late. TUESDAY I\u2019m sowing Nicotiana sanderae \u2018Fragrant Cloud\u2019 in the hope of masses of scented flowers that open at dusk. White flowers are particularly telling in low light, and scent is one of the most important elements in any garden, but often an afterthought.<\/p>\n

WEDNESDAY Levelling pavement where tree roots have lifted some flags. Heavy work! THURSDAY I\u2019m cleaning the insides of our two greenhouses before they fill up with countless seed trays and pots of cuttings. Outside the panes didn\u2019t need it \u2013 so much rain. I\u2019m using a vinegar solution with no harmful chemicals \u2013 completely biodegradable. FRIDAY The eryngium seedlings that had germinated on their seedheads, which I teased out and planted into a seed tray, have grown and now have true leaves.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m moving them on into modules in peat-free compost and they seem to be doing well. What a bonus. SATURDAY Hannah, who helps in the garden on Fridays, pruned several bushes of rose \u2018William Lobb\u2019. Some of the prunings are fairly young and strong so I\u2019m using some of the material as hardwood cuttings, making a slit trench in one corner of the \u2018kitchen bed\u2019. They\u2019re about 20cm long, though only one or two buds are visible when the trench is filled in. SUNDAY Experimenting with pruning hydrangeas.<\/p>\n
