I’ve been busy planning and ordering my seeds and some plug plants. My first thoughts are always about my front garden displays – I know I grow mainly the same plants each year, but I do try to vary the colours.

For this summer, I’ve decided on the following plants, growing some from seeds and some from plug or small plants: pink and white cosmos, lemon marigolds, pink and lemon petunias, blue ageratum, laurentia and lavender, and white busy Lizzies. Baskets will have trailing lemon and apricot begonias, pink and lilac trailing geraniums and ‘La Campanella’ fuchsias. Hopefully the overwintered ‘Put’s Folly’ fuchsias in last year’s baskets have survived in the greenhouse.

While browsing, I saw some small climbing fuchsia plants so I’ve ordered five to try, as well as my favourite ‘Lemon Star’ thunbergias. I still have a few seeds to buy for the veg garden – mainly the cherry tomatoes, as I was really so pleased with the varieties I grew last summer and would like to grow very similar this year. The varieties chosen so far are ‘Black Moon’, ‘Sungold’, ‘White Cherry’, ‘Katiebell’, ‘Luciebell’, ‘Suncherry Premium’ and ‘Shirley’. I’ve bought climbing French bean ‘Blue Lake’, ‘Enorma’ runner beans, ebruary is the last month of meteorological winter, bringing longer days and more daylight.

I use the extra daylight hours to keep the garden jobs moving forward. At this time of year, I’m focussing on planting out my favourite summer round and long beetroot, carrots, parsnips, mangetout and a mix of three colours of courgettes as they were lovely last summer. I’ll try to stick to just three or four chilli varieties!

Cucumbers are ‘Passandra’ and ‘Crystal Apple’ and the peppers are ‘Great Stuff’ and ‘Corno di Toro Rosso’. It’s a quiet time in the garden, though the oval garden needs some tending. Barry power washed the patios and paths just before Christmas. The felt on the big shed was damaged during a storm so it’s now been replaced. We’re still having a problem with the greenhouse door.

Bulbs and spring bedding plants will soon flower. Until then I’m enjoying the beautiful evergreen foliage. Soon the sarcococca and chimonanthus flowers will be scenting the garden. Me choosing plants I hope to repeat last year’s cherry tomato success What a wet patio! Iris unguicularis flowered this year Paperwhites on the Christmas table Plant haul – with new grasses! My highlight A pretty primrose Choisya and sarcococca Pam Gray A Surrey garden that uses every inch of space for colour and interest all year round. Tom Strowlger A traditional and formal garden in Suffolk with a mix of pots, containers, beds and borders.

The lawn takes pride of place in the centre.

Orders despatched within 5-7 working days unless stated otherwise.
