Probably because I do it myself.<\/p>\n

Anxiety and depression can turn a tiny snowball into an avalanche. \u201cDid you get fired?\u201d I ask her. \u201cNo, I didn\u2019t get fired. I\u2019m just fucking hungry and exhausted and completely fucking\u2014\u201d She looks away, unable to finish. \u201cI can\u2019t do this, Leo.\u201d I can\u2019t get over how absolutely broken she looks.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s so unlike her\u2014 Mara is usually proud and steely, her resolve never showing so much as a crack. \u201cYou\u2019re human, you know,\u201d I say. \u201cYou get to make mistakes.\u201d She shakes her head. \u201cYou don\u2019t get it. My job is a lot different than yours. I\u2019m not playing a game.\u201d I keep pushing. \u201cDid some kids refuse to drink the potion you brewed?<\/p>\n

Did they not cry when you cackled at them?\u201d Her nostrils flare with aggravation. \u201cI\u2019m really not in the mood for your bullshit, Leo.\u201d \u201cSo tell me what happened and we can drop it.\u201d She pinches the bridge of her nose. \u201cWhen have you ever dropped anything? You\u2019ll be making fun of my bush at my damn funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n

I bark a note of laughter. \u201cMe? You carry a grudge like no one I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d Her voice rises as she says, \u201cFuck you, Leo. Only you would kick me when I\u2019m already down. This is why I can\u2019t stand you.\u201d Tears shine in her eyes.<\/p>\n

I should listen to her and leave her alone, but I push her further instead. \u201cIt\u2019s probably not even a big deal. Are you just being melodramatic?\u201d She bursts open like a dam, her eyes darkening with rage. \u201cNot a big deal? Kiss my entire ass, Leo!<\/p>\n

Some of the guys have been sitting in the hot tub. When Carter walks into the living area, his hair is damp and a cigar is tucked behind one of his ears. \u201cIt\u2019s poker time, boys. I\u2019ll accept IOUs.\u201d He cleaned all of us out last night, wisely drinking water while the rest of us got loaded.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m nursing a hell of a hangover today and only drinking water. We have a rare eight-day break in December, and we\u2019re spending the first three nights of it on this getaway. After we fly back home the day after tomorrow, I\u2019m pig sitting Carter\u2019s family pet, Darling, while he and his wife, Suki, take their girls to Fiji for the rest of the break. \u201cLet\u2019s do whatever Bash wants,\u201d Andrei, another of my teammates, says.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s his bachelor party.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s not like there are many options,\u201d Carter says gruffly. \u201cWe\u2019re trapped here because of the storm.\u201d Bash comes into the room, a beer in hand. \u201cThe plan was to stay here anyway.
