Haylee measured time not by clocks, but by the slow crawl of shadows along the floorboards. By the hollow ache in her stomach. By the faint creak of footsteps on the stairs every few days.

Bob Marley began to play for the fifty-first thousand, eight hundred and fortieth fucking time. Not that Haylee knew that number. She’d once tried to work it out – how many loops it had been – but even with nothing else to do, the idea had felt too bleak to finish properly. What she did know was that it was Halloween. Earlier, children had pounded on the front door downstairs, their bright, breathless voices shouting, “Trick or treat!” followed by laughter. For one fragile, electric moment, hope surged through Haylee so violently it made her dizzy.

She screamed for them until her throat burned raw. But no one heard her. Or if they had, they didn’t understand. The silence settled back in, thick and familiar. Well, the silence beyond Bob fucking Marley. Months had passed. The room had changed in the slow, quiet way abandoned places always do when abandoned. Dust softened the edges of everything. The candles had melted into pale puddles of hardened wax on the dresser.

The bowl of strawberries had long ago collapsed into dark stains that no longer smelled of anything at all. The pink cuffs still circled her wrists. The faux fur had flattened and dulled with time, no longer soft or playful – just worn fabric pressed between cold metal and fragile skin. They had become part of the bed now. Part of the room. Part of her.

Her body had changed too. She was thinner, sharply so – collarbones pronounced, wrists delicate beneath the restraints.

“Sometimes, a quick death isn’t enough. Sometimes, people deserve to leave this world in the worst ways imaginable.” The words seeped from the flickering black-and-white television, every syllable trembling through the tinny speaker in Room 13 of the Prior Motel. The set itself sat crooked on a liquor-stained dresser, its casing yellowed with age. The screen’s pale glow bled into the room, washing over peeling wallpaper and catching in the glass of empty vodka bottles lined along the surface.

On the floor, the light reached a woman sprawled across cigarette- burned carpet, her body half-illuminated in the static shimmer. Helen Taylor. She was just thirty years old, but recent trauma had etched years into her face. Her features were a swollen map of bruises, her lips split and sticky with blood. One eye was swollen shut; the other was wide and glassy.

Every breath rattled wetly through her chest – something deep inside her ribs clicking with each inhale. She tried to move, but her body refused. All she could do was lie there, trembling. “Sometimes, waiting for karma just isn’t enough,” the voice on the TV continued. On screen, the presenter, Marian, stood at the centre of a dimly lit office. Behind her, rows of figures sat at desks, typing in a rigid, mechanical rhythm that felt almost rehearsed.

They were pale – almost translucent, faces slack and drained of expression, as if the life had been quietly pulled out of them. Their eyes stayed fixed on the screens in front of them, hollow and unblinking, lit by a faint glow that flickered across their skin in cold pulses. They may have looked human… once upon a time. Marian herself looked perfectly ordinary – mousy brown hair in a neat bun, a cardigan buttoned to her throat, a gentle, reassuring smile.

The delicate cursive beneath her image confirmed her full name: Marian Hawkes. “Welcome to Corpse Corp Limited!” she chirped, her voice unnervingly bright. “The revolutionary new service for anyone tired of waiting for justice to come knocking!” The image stuttered. For a heartbeat, Marian’s grin stretched too far, splitting her face into something grotesque.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
