And how will you make sure that your goals are nurtured and have what they need to grow? One of my all‐time favourite frameworks for setting (and actually achieving) goals is the GROW framework, and not just because its name aligns sahhhh nicely with this whole garden metaphor I’ve got going on here! The GROW framework is based on Sir John Whitmore’s coaching model, which I’ve adapted over the years to help thousands of people achieve big financial life goals.

Let’s go through the key elements of the GROW framework one by one, as well as the questions to ask yourself and the actions to complete, so you come out the other side with a clear map of your goals. Then, in the following chapters, I help you figure out how to help those goals grow and flourish. So let’s get into it. Here’s how the elements in the GROW method work together: G = goals: Do they align with your aspirations, hopes and dreams?

R = reality: Is it realistic, or a fantasy? O = options: How could you make it happen? W = will: How are you actually going to make it happen? And here’s what you’ll need to really get stuck in: your new money alter ego (your version of your Batman persona — refer to the previous chapter) a quiet space with little to no distractions (a sign on the door that says, ‘Do not interrupt, currently planning my future’ is optional) paper and a pen (you can complete this on a computer, but typing engages fewer neural circuits, meaning your brain isn’t engaged in the same way as when you get oldschool with paper and pen) highlighters, textas or coloured pens and pencils your favourite playlist and headphones (if this helps with creativity and focus) drinks and snacks (surely no explanation needed) a friend or partner (if you work better with an accountability buddy or using body doubling).

A note for my ADHD friends: I am particularly sensitive to sounds, light and interruptions when I am hyperfocusing (or hoping to hyperfocus!). You’ll know what works best for you, but get yourself in the right space to support yourself for this task.

2 DIRT: Dishing on the systems and structures that stifle our growth and feed us fibs Trouble and strife through the ages Give it up for the women who came before us You can’t sit with us (unless you’re already rich) Who wants to be a billionaire? Yeah, nah So there’s the dirt — now what? Notes 3 DIG: Unearthing what shapes our money beliefs and behaviours beneath the surface Dirt poor, or poor dirt?

‘Don’t touch the iron, it’s hot’: Learning from painful memories Dig a little deeper Mumma’s boy girl, Daddy’s girl boy Teaching triangles over taxes Stories and stereotype seeding Planting insecurities Dirt bag Treating ourselves like dirt — and digging new pathways Feeling spendy? Read this Implementing the 24‐hour rule I dig you, and you dig money Notes 4 SHED: Letting go of shame and perfectionism to make space for more helpful money habits Self‐care (beyond bubble baths) The shed where shame lives Confront your money monster The money monster cast list Shedding the perfectionist Starting scared Is your glass half full, or half empty?

Avoiding the backslide Holy‐shit, Batman!

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
