In conversation with other prisoners and with the camp\u2019s female SS guards, de Maublanc heard that a new course of instruction was being given at the large SS training facility located on the grounds of the sprawling camp. Trainees\u2014both male and female\u2014were being told of the attitude they should adopt toward advancing Allied forces. When the capitulation of local German units seemed imminent, the SS members were told to discard their uniforms and destroy any incriminating documents.<\/p>\n

The Allied troops were to be told by the now disguised SS members that they had always been opposed to the Nazi regime, they were ardent admirers of democracy, and they wanted to help in building a new, democratic Germany. As Fred wrote in his original report, the training at Ravensbr\u00fcck demonstrated the \u201clengths to which the SS [is] apparently willing to go to preserve [itself] as a new underground in Germany.\u201d1 A copy of the report was given to Gordon Sheen, and in March 1945, the SHAEF CI chief suggested that interrogating suspected \u201cunderground\u201d SS members would be an ideal additional mission for the ALU, though Fred responded that such a task would require far more than the five agents that currently comprised the unit.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, additional G-men were finally on the way. IN RESPONSE TO THE WELCOME NEWS that additional agents would be coming to Europe, on May 8, Fred Ayer sent Hoover a message outlining a proposal for the unit\u2019s future organization and operations. In accordance with the wishes of both the Bureau and the Army, Fred wrote, the majority of the ALU\u2019s members should be moved forward into Germany with SHAEF. The command\u2019s CI Branch would be headquartered in Frankfurt, rather than Wiesbaden, as originally planned, and the ALU would share office space with Gordon Sheen\u2019s organization and the SHAEF CIC detachment.<\/p>\n
