Before Adam could set the bug steed to moving again, following whatever direction Torliam indicated, three familiar Estreyans hurried across the arena, weaving through the coral- like growths and squinting against the smoke to reach us before we left. \u201cWe will accompany you!\u201d Henrik yelled, indicating himself and his enforcers.<\/p>\n

Adam rolled his eyes. \u201cHurry up, then!\u201d The enforcers crawled up behind us, and we set off toward the city, Jacky letting out a battle cry and waving her arm around in a circle like some old-world cowgirl. \u201cHow far?\u201d I yelled. Torliam turned back to look at me. \u201cToward the outer edge of the city. We must hurry. I have called our ship to meet us there, in case they attempt to escape again.\u201d I grinned.<\/p>\n

Even if they did try to escape, Torliam had them now. We would be able to \ufb01nd them no matter where they went. \u201cHow did you know they would return to the Well?\u201d Henrik yelled in my ear, leaning forward behind me. \u201cJust a hunch!\u201d I shrugged. It was the truth, but still\u2026 I glanced toward Zed and sent him a Window with a thought. \u2014Did they seem surprised to see you?\u2014 -Eve- Zed turned around to me and nodded. \u2014Completely.\u2014 -Zed- \u2014And was there a redheaded woman?\u2014 -Eve- Gods of Smoke and Stars \u2014I didn\u2019t see one.<\/p>\n

Unless she can change her appearance at will, pretty sure she wasn\u2019t there.\u2014 -Zed- I frowned. Perhaps she\u2019d simply been using whatever her Skill was to hide. It had made her disappear from my room, and, seeing as she was part of a semi-famous thief gang around here, I didn\u2019t want to discount the possibility of effec\u2010 tive stealth Skills.<\/p>\n

I looked around warily, the hair on the back of my neck rising with the suspicion that we were being watched. I turned my head back to Henrik. \u201cThe blockade of the city\u2019s exit routes is still up, right?\u201d He nodded to me, deeply enough that it was almost a bow, then had to catch himself as the ink construct jerked sharply around members of the alarmed crowd milling at the edge of the arena.<\/p>\n

Small creatures turned to watch us from the shaded nooks and crannies they’d hidden themselves in, even their quick re\ufb02exes too slow to do more than take notice as we shot by. The \ufb02oor of the canyon, channeling only the barest trickle of water, rose upward as the chasm widened. Through a trick of perspec\u2010 tive, it looked like the rough walls rushed away from my perch at the portside viewing window into the distance, though in truth the canyon was simply widening and growing more shallow as we approached the mouth.<\/p>\n

Even as I had this thought, our little ship exited the canyon, \ufb02ying out over a massive, dry seabed. I could not see far before everything became obscured by the haze of smoke in the air. “We\u2019re here,” I said, leaning closer to the window as we zoomed over a sprawling mass of tents and stalls. The only area not covered with people was the far side of the dry seabed, which I could barely make out.<\/p>\n

It seemed to be covered in growths and broken by a glass- 1 shatter pattern of smaller chasms. The seabed ended abruptly where huge buttes broke free of the plain. Each butte was crowned with a splash of greenery, the only vegetation in sight. Zed bounced over, shoving his face up against the window with a grin. “Finally! Is that the Trial arena? Wow, there are so many people. Are they all here to watch the tournament, too?<\/p>\n

Where’s the god?” Kris came over to watch too, directing her new marionette, which was still a work in progress, to hold her tiny form up to the window so she could see out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
