All rights reserved. Licence number Directions The route starts on the A82 just outside the Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum, where the Ember buses from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Fort William stop. Both Upper Tyndrum and Tyndrum Lower railway stations are not far from the start as well. The cafe at the start is great for a pre-ride breakfast, or you can also stop at the popular Green Welly Stop a little further up the road.<\/p>\n

Just after the Green Welly Stop turn R on to the West Highland Way (WHW). This popular long-distance path connects Milngavie near Glasgow with Fort William. While people (try to!) ride it in its entirety as a cycle route, there are some sections which are more suited to walking. This first part of your route follows one of the most scenic sections of the WHW. After about 300m you will pass the start of the Highland Trail 550, an annual bikepacking race organised by Alan Goldsmith.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the Tour Divide, this was one of the first ultra races in Europe and has since become a classic. Pass through a gate and continue climbing on the gravel track, which soon runs parallel to the A82 and then crosses the railway line over a bridge. As soon as you pass through another gate the track gets much rougher; riders with a lower gear ratio and those not used to technical singletrack will need to push.<\/p>\n

This is not the worst place to get off your bike, as the views towards Beinn Dorain are magnificent. If you manage to ride to the highest point at 336m, then a steep downhill follows before you cross the railway again through a small tunnel. Pass a third gate here and turn R, where the riding gets much easier.<\/p>\n

Originally from Germany, he has explored Scotland extensively since he moved here in 2009. Before cycling 34,000 kilometres unsupported around the world on a single-speed mountain bike, he mapped his first bikepacking route, the Capital Trail. On his return he founded Bikepacking Scotland (bikepackingscotland.com) and has worked in many corners of Scotland, designing bikepacking and gravel routes. He is a co-director of the Cateran Ecomuseum, and founder of Dirt Dash events and the Edinburgh Dawn Patrol.<\/p>\n

Markus is an ultra-endurance racer, with three successful finishes of the Highland Trail 550 (Scotland), along with single finishes of the Silk Road Mountain Race (Kyrgyzstan), Atlas Mountain Race (Morocco) and Mother North (Norway). Markus\u2019s writing has appeared in a wide variety of magazines and online publications in English and German. He is the author of Great British Gravel Rides, Bikepacking Scotland and Gravel Rides Cairngorms & Perthshire, and he also co-edited Big Rides: Great Britain & Ireland.
