They wouldn’t do shit,” Misha snarled. “A man has to fight for his family.” “Would you like to embrace a new family, Misha the Fighter?” I chimed in. I liked his attitude. He reminded me of myself, of a young Andrej – full of ideals but lacking in knowledge. “Only if it is honorable.” Misha looked me in the eye and a smile returned to his face. “Watch your words, patsan,” Kamen scolded him, and looked at Sidoy, who gave a slight nod.

“It is you who will have to prove your honor. Come back with your things. We’ll have a bunk ready for you.” “Andrycha will be your mentor.” Sidoy pointed at me. “Talk to him when you come back.” I knew it meant that I was now responsible for Misha’s conduct. I had to get him up to speed on everything and help him with his prospect task, whatever that would be.

Misha bowed his head theatrically and left the building. The last of the newcomers was still waiting. He was in his thirties, short, but brawny and with a face showing signs of a recent beating. His lips were swollen, and one of his eyes had a deep blue bag underneath. Clean shaven otherwise like all the zeki straight from initial processing, he looked quite unassuming until he removed his shirt.

His chest was adorned with a tiger’s head baring its fangs, and beside some smaller tattoos that I couldn’t read from a distance, he wore depictions of military epaulettes on his shoulders. “Greetings, bratan,” Kamen said, “what is your klichka?” “I go by Afi,” the man replied with his head raised high. “Afi, like afiora – a conman? Is that what you’re in for?”

“I am just an innocent man,” Afi smirked. A few guys in the crowd chuckled. “Where do you come from?” I asked. “Yekaterinburg.” Silence ensued. It was almost as if everyone was holding their breath. This was not something the vory expected to hear from one of their kind. When asked where he is from, a real vor names the prisons he’s done time in, not his city.

A novice might say something like that, but not an anointed vor, with authoritative ink on his body. “Are you a vor,” Sidoy asked, raising himself up from his bunk. His face was unreadable, but the very fact that he stood up during the questioning meant trouble. Afi was unaware of that and he began nodding, but as he opened his mouth to speak, Sidoy raised his hand and cut him off.

“Wait before you speak.

No part of this publication may be reproduced, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, including photocopying, recording, or other electronic or mechanical methods, without the prior written permission of the publisher, except as permitted by U.S. copyright law.
