A white cloud of sand flew past the edges of his blinding glare, and then he felt some of it against his face. The pain and the glare vanished. Sunday rolled up off the floor, clutching the now-empty sandwich bag she had filled with ordinary grocery store salt. She launched that same angry fist into Jamal\u2019s side, driving him back from Evan. Lex had also come too close to her. Sunday continued her lunge in a downward roll, kicking her legs through his to bring him to the floor.<\/p>\n

The second revolver came out of the holster on her left hip and fired. \u201cNo!\u201d Jamal shouted while Lex cried out. He had his wand up again and blurted another word as Sunday turned the pistol on him. The weapon clicked as if empty. Jamal roared with effort and waved dramatically. Evan saw a faint shimmer reach from Jamal to Sunday as sorcery flung her against the wall. Recovered now, Evan was mid-rush toward Jamal when the shimmer turned on him and sent Evan right back to the floor.<\/p>\n

Grains of sand coated Evan\u2019s face and hand upon landing. He\u2019d fallen right in the remains of Sunday\u2019s magic-draining trick, which seemed was just as bad for him as the others. The starry pattern on his sleeve and the back of his hand faded. He felt an itch all over his body. \u201cHelp me,\u201d Jamal growled, again betraying an effort of will.<\/p>\n

\u201cHelp me,\u201d Lex coughed back. \u201cI\u2019m fucking shot.\u201d \u201cShoot her back. You\u2019ve got a gun. Shoot \u2019em both.\u201d \u201cHow about we help?\u201d asked a new voice. Evan looked back down their path to stare down black fur, bright red eyes, and snarling menace. He couldn\u2019t put a breed to the huge dog if he tried.<\/p>\n
