Still, hypothyroidism and adrenal deficiency, unrelated to hypopituitarism, are associated with early and delayed puberty. Both can cause delayed bone growth. Delayed puberty happens more frequently in girls (26% in girls vs 7% in boys) due to ovarian failure. Genetic or birth abnormalities can lead to ovarian failure.

This can be caused by xenoestrogens preventing proper gonadal formation in the fetus. Girls with Turner Syndrome, due to a chromosomal disorder, will be shorter in stature. Ovarian failure can also be caused by autoimmunity related to diabetes type l and type ll and Addison’s disease, which is caused by tumors in the adrenal glands.

These conditions are extremely rare. Amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation. It can be transitory or permanent. It is diagnosed when there is no menstruation at the age of 13 if there has been no development of sexual characteristics or at 15 if sexual characteristics have developed. Primary amenorrhea usually involves a severe endocrine disorder, such as a tumor or malformation in the pituitary, hypothalamus, thyroid, or adrenal gland. Secondary amenorrhea is more common and is defined as an absence of menstruation for 3 to 6 months in girls who previously had a regular period.

It is usually transitory for adolescents and only an issue if the person is trying to conceive. It may bring insecurity to the teenager or her family if they think it indicates a disorder that may affect future fertility. Aside from pituitary or hypothalamic tumors, which are rare, it is associated with low thyroid function, irregular adrenal function, malnourishment, low-fat diets, and overexercise.

Copyright © 2024 by Elizabeth Bright All rights reserved. This discussion led me to her empowering book, Good Fat Is Good for Women: Menopause, which aligned with my understanding of the benefits of dietary fatty meat for optimal health.

In this first book, Bright effectively debunks the common misconceptions surrounding menopause, offering a more accurate perspective on hormones and challenging the notion that menopause must be an unpleasant experience. She provides thoughtful guidance on navigating menopause healthily. Bright applies her insightful approach to adolescence and puberty in her second book, Good Fat Is Good for Girls: Puberty and Adolescence, offering similar clarity and understanding. I have often used Bright’s recommendations in our clinical practice to help menopausal women thrive.

But how do we support young girls and boys? In her second book, Bright sheds light on the complexities and wonders of the transition from girlhood to womanhood. She articulates the journey as a unique and personal experience for each person, both influenced by various environmental and societal factors.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
