I was very fortunate to receive support from generous donors, and I never forgot the opportunity they provided. My wife and I now have the opportunity to similarly donate in our own limited ways to student scholarships at my alma mater Berry College, particularly to the Griswell Scholars, named in honor of a wonderful philanthropist named Barry Griswell.<\/p>\n

The scholarship supports young people who have overcome the most difficult circumstances in life. We know firsthand how that act of generosity, small but meaningful for us now, can be transformative in the life of a young person. Even more dramatically, we get to see how financial generosity can transform the poorest lives and communities. Many of the most profound leaders I know of are dedicating their lives to serving needy people and communities in the world: Zaman International\u2019s Najah Bazzy, CARE International\u2019s Sofia Sprechman Sineiro, International Justice Mission\u2019s Gary Haugen, and World Vision\u2019s Edgar Sandoval Sr. I\u2019ve had the great privilege of seeing how their sacrifices and those of their donors are breaking the barriers of homelessness, poverty, and human trafficking to allow otherwise-desperate people and communities the opportunities to flourish and be generous to others.<\/p>\n

Generosity is powerful, but how can we do it well? We\u2019ll explore simple tools and strategies to be more generous and make money good in the remainder of this chapter. Simply Put, Give More The first step to giving generously is just that: giving more. If, on average, most of us give 2 percent or less of our income to charity, there is ample room for the vast majority of people globally to allocate a greater portion of their income and wealth to serving others.<\/p>\n

There are at least four ways to do this. I call these approaches the four Ps of giving: percentage, passion, partner, and participate (figure 5-3).<\/p>\n

At one level, that\u2019s a silly question. Isn\u2019t money always good? You and I and everyone we know use it to survive and thrive. Money affords us shelter, food, clothing, and all of life\u2019s necessities. It allows us to take part in fun activities, like vacationing with family and friends. It purchased the computer on which I\u2019m writing this book and is one of the rewards I\u2019ll get for publishing it.<\/p>\n

Money can be used to acquire an education, physical safety, quality health care, and a family pet. And its absence can be devastating. When I was born, my mom and dad lived in a single-wide mobile home in Florida. When bad storms would come, they would purchase tickets to the local movie theater to wait them out in relative safety.<\/p>\n
