until I walked over a small crest which had obscured my view and was shocked by what I saw. Police were everywhere in the park. Uniformed as well as \u2018public order response\u2019 (also known as \u2018Premier Daniel Andrews\u2019 Brownshirts\u2019), and horse-mounted police were swarming through the gardens. Fixed and roving patrols covered every path and every intersection, and making matters worse, I\u2019d already been spotted by police not far away beside the path I\u2019d turned down.<\/p>\n

I knew very well that to turn and try and leave now would invite immediate arrest. I instantly knew I had no choice but to walk into the lion\u2019s den without so much as breaking stride\u2026 and depend on my camouflage, my \u2018grey man\u2019 uniform, to get me through. My \u2018uniform\u2019 was slightly different every time, but on that particular day I\u2019d employed all the tricks, and I\u2019m so glad I did. The purpose of my camouflage, like any camouflage, was to appear like I belonged in that environment.<\/p>\n

Military camouflage tries to make it look like no-one is there, protest camouflage tries to make it look like there\u2019s some other reason you are there. Sneakers with jeans, a jacket, and a mask. No visible slogans or signs. And the piece-de-resistance\u2026 a grocery store shopping bag in one hand and a coffee cup in the other. As police eyeballed each and every passer-by, they were looking for people who did not \u2018belong\u2019, who did not appear at first glance to be complying with the \u2018reasons to leave home\u2019.<\/p>\n

Exercise was one accepted \u2018reason\u2019, although only for 1 hour per day, and shopping was another. The saving grace that day was that the weather was lovely and there were plenty of people out and about doing both, so there was a \u2018background\u2019 of people for me to blend in with.<\/p>\n

To my children Winston, Chloe, and Florence; by the Grace of God I hope to pass to you a world that is freer than the one I was given. At times that seems an impossible task, but we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us! And if I fail in my lifetime, know that God\u2019s timing is perfect and that He is faithful to complete the work that He has begun, whether we see it in this life or the next.<\/p>\n

To my wife Edwena; to be a Saint you must perform two miracles, you have performed three; Your first is that you somehow understand and tolerate me; your second is that you share my vision, support my work, and bear my burdens despite all that it has cost us; your third is that you brought our children in to this world, and for those three miracles you are and will always be a Saint to me.<\/p>\n

To The Few; to those who stood alongside me or indeed in front of me as we stood for freedom and human rights against Covid fear and madness, I am forever in your debt. It is thanks to you that I was never truly alone. You inspired me, spurred me on, and by your courage and tenacity in the face of all odds, you gave me hope. It is my hope that this book will inspire others just as you have inspired me, and that through these pages we \u2018the few\u2019 will soon become the many.<\/p>\n
