I sat up slowly, a little confused about where I was. But when the memory of Sam bringing me to his house returned, a thrill shot through me. Glancing over at the other side of the bed, I found it empty. I was disappointed, but it wasn\u2019t like I was in any shape to seduce him anyway. I threw back the covers, and made my way unsteadily to the bathroom.<\/p>\n

I brushed my teeth and carefully washed my face, taking care not to get the bandage wet. I started to redress in my own clothes, but noticed there was dried blood on the shirt. I wasn\u2019t comfortable enough to borrow Sam\u2019s clothes without asking, so instead I put the pajamas back on. Then I made my way down the curved staircase and followed the sound of clattering dishes. When I walked in the big bright kitchen, I found Sam scrambling eggs on a large stove.<\/p>\n

He looked over and smiled. \u201cMorning.\u201d \u201cHey.\u201d \u201cYou look a little better.\u201d \u201cI am. My head is barely throbbing.\u201d I touched the bump on my forehead. \u201cDo I have to keep this bandage on?\u201d He frowned. \u201cI believe the nurse said to keep them on until tomorrow. Then we\u2019re supposed to remove it, and clean the area with peroxide and water.\u201d \u201cI have a shift today,\u201d I grumbled. I sat at the bar near where he was cooking.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t wear these bandages.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re not working today.\u201d He looked at me like I was nuts. \u201cBut\u2014\u201d \u201cThere\u2019s no \u2018but\u2019.\u201d He scowled. \u201cYou\u2019re not going in today or tomorrow. I\u2019ve already covered your shifts.\u201d \u201cSeriously?\u201d \u201cYep.\u201d He poured me a glass of orange juice. \u201cWe don\u2019t need you fainting in peoples drinks.\u201d \u201cI guess.\u201d \u201cYou can\u2019t have seriously thought you were going to just go back to work today?\u201d He laughed. \u201cI guess I didn\u2019t think it through.\u201d<\/p>\n

He set a plate of eggs and bacon in front of me. \u201cEat.\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t believe you cooked me breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t sure what to say. I felt numb about my mom, and sick at the thought of returning to that little dusty town in Texas. I\u2019d run as far and as fast as I could when I was seventeen. I probably hadn\u2019t spoken to my mom more than five times in eight years. And I hadn\u2019t missed it either. \u201cPiper, do you hear me?\u201d Her tone was sharp. \u201cI hear you.\u201d She exhaled. \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have to be the only one taking care of her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHire someone. I\u2019ll pay half.\u201d I nodded to the waitress as she set the bill on the table. I pulled out a twenty and dropped it on top of the check. Then I slid out of the booth and left the restaurant. The late afternoon sun beat down on my back as I headed to my car, with my phone still pressed to my ear. \u201cFine, but throwing money at this won\u2019t solve all the issues. You know how mom is about strangers, and I don\u2019t have time to do everything alone.<\/p>\n

I have a kid and a husband to tend to.\u201d \u201cI have shit to do too, Trina. I have Responsibilities.\u201d But mostly I don\u2019t want to come home. She snorted a laugh. \u201cPlease. What did you do, adopt a cat?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m talking about my job.\u201d \u201cCan you really even call that a job?\u201d Irritation prickled me at her judgmental tone.<\/p>\n

\u201cBye, Trina.\u201d \u201cWait.\u201d She spoke quickly. \u201cDon\u2019t hang up. I\u2019m sorry.\u201d \u201cI have a show in ten minutes. I don\u2019t have time to talk right now.\u201d I put on my Bluetooth and then started the engine and the Toyota purred to life. \u201cYou never have time to talk, but we need to.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t do this anymore. Not alone at least. You have to come home. Plus, if mom dies and you don\u2019t say goodbye, it will haunt you for the rest of your life.\u201d I steered the car around a sharp corner toward the club. \u201cShe couldn\u2019t care less if I come home. You and I both know it.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s not true.\u201d She spoke softly. \u201cShe asked for you.\u201d I grunted. \u201cBullshit. You\u2019re just saying that so I\u2019ll come back.\u201d \u201cNo. She said she wants to see you.\u201d There were muffled voices behind her and she covered the mouth piece.<\/p>\n

When she came back on the line, she sounded breathless. \u201cCrap, I have to go.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
