Just\u2026 steady.\u201d I lower my chin, my voice softer now. \u201cAnd\u2026\u201d My cheeks warm. \u201cI want him to look at me like I\u2019m the only woman in the room.\u201d \u201cGracie,\u201d Kirsten whispers. \u201cOpen your eyes.\u201d I do. He\u2019s there.<\/p>\n

Standing across the room. Beck. He lifts his eyebrows. It\u2019s his are you okay look. He\u2019s been giving me that look since kindergarten. Across playgrounds. Across classrooms. And now, across this bar. I give him a small nod. I\u2019m fine. His shoulders relax. He flashes me a quick smile and turns back to the table with our friends. \u201cYou know the guy you just described?\u201d Kirsten says softly. \u201cYeah?\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s Beck. He\u2019s all of that. At least to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d I say, rolling my eyes. \u201cWe\u2019ve had this conversation before.\u201d Kirsten straightens. Steps closer. Her cheeks are flushed, and is she\u2026 mad? She never gets mad. Even when we argue, it\u2019s calm. Logical. Controlled. \u201cGracie Ann Smith.\u201d She grips my shoulders and gives me a small shake. \u201cWe graduate in three months. We\u2019re not kids anymore. I will not stand by while you throw away the one man who\u2019s loved you your entire life.\u201d I try to pull back. She doesn\u2019t let me.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen to me,\u201d she says, holding my gaze. \u201cYou are going to lose him if you keep this up. Beck.\u201d Her voice drops. \u201cAnd it\u2019s going to be the worst mistake of your life.\u201d Panic flares, sharp and sudden. She can\u2019t be right. Beck\u2019s been with me forever. He always will be. Except\u2026not the last couple of months. When he stopped taking my calls. Barely texted back. And for the first time tonight, I let myself wonder what happens if this, this distance, this drift, isn\u2019t temporary?<\/p>\n

What if I\u2019m actually losing him? What if it\u2019s my fault? Beck Present I settle back into my seat, forcing myself to breathe. Gracie\u2019s fine. She\u2019s talking to Kirsten, not the ten million men who\u2019ve been orbiting her all night. I\u2019ve been watching it happen, even when I shouldn\u2019t have. Even when I was out on the dance floor with Trish, her hands on my shoulders, her laugh too close to my ear, my attention kept slipping back across the room. Over the tops of heads.<\/p>\n

Between bodies. Always finding Gracie. Like I\u2019m a compass spinning and she\u2019s my true north. I told myself I should focus on Trish. That it was rude not to. That she deserved my attention, since I was the one who said yes to dancing with her. But my eyes kept betraying me. Every time someone stepped too close to Gracie.<\/p>\n
