Clearly knowing what it was allowed her to fill in the gaps. “They appear when the walls between worlds grow dangerously thin.” “Could you be a little more specific?”<\/p>\n

I prompted. “Like, what are they capable of? What am I walking into here?” “They’re incredibly powerful,” Vesper said. “They can manipulate things and create illusions that feel completely real.” “Great,” I muttered. “And how exactly am I supposed to deal with that?” Astra’s expression was grim. “They can’t lie, but they’ll twist words until you’re dizzy. Don’t let it redirect you. Stay focused.” “They can also see through any deception,” Vesper added.<\/p>\n

“Don’t even try to bluff. It’ll know.” I swallowed hard. “What about offensive capabilities? Can it, you know…” I made a vague gesture with my hand. “Turn you inside out with a thought?” Vesper finished. “Technically yes, but they rarely interfere directly that way. They’re more… arbiters than warriors.” “Unless provoked,” Astra added helpfully.<\/p>\n

“Oh, perfect. I shouldn\u2019t piss off the reality-bending truth detector with a penchant for word games.” I ran a hand through my hair. “Anything else I should know before I walk in there completely outmatched?” “They respect bloodlines and duty,” Astra said. “Your Grey heritage will count for something.” “Let’s hope it counts for ‘don’t obliterate on sight,'” I muttered, squaring my shoulders. I was so screwed. I placed my palm against the worn wood. Magic thrummed beneath its surface. Mrs. Abernathy’s boundary spell shimmered before vanishing to allow me through.<\/p>\n

I took a deep breath and twisted the knob. My legs shook as I placed my foot on the first step. Keeping my focus on the energy around me, I climbed to the top. The attic blazed with blue light that pulsed from the figure by the window. It wasn\u2019t quite human. Its limbs were stretched too long, like a funhouse mirror reflection gone rogue. Its fingers tapered to points that could probably slice through dimensions.<\/p>\n

It reminded me of my mother’s expression back in high school. It had been the worst when she\u2019d found out I’d hexed Brittany Thompson’s hair to turn into snakes. In my defense, Brittany was a bitch who was bullying Sarah Mitchell about her braces and glasses.<\/p>\n

The snakes had been non- venomous and surprisingly well-behaved. Apparently, that wasn’t the point. I would do it again. Ignoring that tangent, I refocused on CC, my sentient house. She had opinions. Strong ones. And right now, they were all about our distinct lack of progress over the last two weeks. I happened to agree with her. I clutched my coffee mug closer and inhaled the rich aroma like it might actually wake up my brain cells.<\/p>\n

The morning sun streamed through suspiciously clean windows. Was that CC’s version of stress cleaning? Or was it Mom? She and Mimi were still in my house. Their stuff was being delivered and unloaded today, so they would be moving to their new house. They were less than a block away, so it wasn\u2019t like they were going to be far. “Fourteen days,” Vesper declared from his perch atop my refrigerator. His silver runes shifted through his midnight fur. The ancient symbols pulsed with each word he spoke. They broadcast his agitation like a supernatural mood ring.<\/p>\n

“Two weeks of running ourselves ragged. What do we have to show for it? A pissed-off pixie colony, your grandmother’s ever- expanding weapons collection, and a worn path in the hardwood that CC won’t stop complaining about.” I opened my mouth to defend our pixie-related decisions, but the argument echoing down the stairs made me wince instead. CC’s lights flared in warning just before my grandmother Mimi burst into the kitchen like a one-woman SWAT team. Her combat boots thundered across the pristine floor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
