Climate Risk Visualizations and AR Communication Products When read as numbers, temperatures and sea-level rises can be difficult to conceptualize. Recently, augmented reality (AR) has been used in the global insurance tool Climate Smart to produce immersive simulations for communicating climate risks. Some of the AR-based features include Climate Smart AR visualizations of climate risk, Climate Smart AR capabilities, Climate Smart AR9, Natural Disasters View 1, Natural Disasters View 2, and other Climate Smart AR modules.

Based on the “edgypurist” paradigm of visualization, Climate Smart AR has developed interactive simulations to assist people and businesses in visualizing the impact of natural disasters, such as flooding or wildfires, on their property. Policyholders can obtain coverage tailored to local environmental hazards by embedding context-specific climate risk information into the policy offering (Brook et al., 2023).

Tools like FloodVision by Climate Central use AR to simulate flood risks, enabling users to visualize the impact of sea-level rise on their communities (FloodVision, n.d.). This engagement promotes practical action and risk mitigation approaches to fill the gap between climatic information and insurance plans easily. AR generates user awareness that helps it make better decisions and more sustainable behavior.

5.4. Startups and Sustainability Focus In India, new-age InsurTech firms are digitizing their processes to become more eco-friendly and optimize customer experience. These have seamless digital processes, mobile engagements, and behavior-based insurance frameworks that incentivize green behaviors like eco-driving. While technology assists in faster and more convenient experiences, it also helps in the accomplishment of landmarks where environmental-to-mass waste emission is minimized (Yadav, 2025).

At the level of regulator, mammoth efforts are being put forth in order to make the insurance field sustainable. In recent years, governance regulations have required that insurers maintain their ESG framework, and that each insurer present its framework to its respective boards on an annual basis for review and approval.

It included the indemnity institute which is matching climate risk therefore integrating it with underwriting, green asset portfolio (Institute of Directors, n.d.) and many other green products. Also, similar to these disclosures and guidance documents with a climate- change focus, they are made referentially accountable to global best practices (Guidance on the Integration of ESG Risks Into Insurance Underwriting, n.d.). Another force behind building a sustainable insurance ecosystem is from the government, in the form of green bonds and other related sustainability-related financial instruments.

Editorial matter and selection © 2026 Sonal Trivedi, Pushan Kumar Dutta, Christo Ananth, and Anuj Kumar.
