When I turned onto my street, my heart dropped straight into my stomach at the sight of Kaiser’s vehicle parked in my driveway. He stepped to the side so I wouldn’t hit him, real casual, like his presence wasn’t unannounced. His cocky grin, a familiar sight I had learned to both value and dislike, was firmly in place as I eased past him and pulled into my driveway.

I killed the engine, but didn’t move right away. Just sat there, fingers still wrapped around the steering wheel, trying to gather my thoughts. Why am I so flustered right now? I didn’t have a chance to answer the question before he took it upon himself to open my door. He extended his hand, and I graciously took it. The moment my feet were on the ground, he pulled my body into his and wrapped me in his arms. His signature scent, the one he’d paid a perfumer to create, comforted me in a way that nothing else could.

Without an ounce of shame, I took a deep whiff. A chuckle caused vibrations to race through his torso, where my head was resting. He knew I loved his scent. Prior to him, I don’t know if it was possible, but he smelled too damn fine for his own good. “I went home first, but you weren’t there,” he said, voice smooth and amused as he shut my vehicle door. “Being there without you didn’t feel right.”

His grin widened, unfazed. “If you had come with me, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” He stared down at me, and my heartbeat began to race. When I realized that I was still in his embrace, I took a step back. I had to clear my throat to get my mind right. “Had I gone with you, I wouldn’t have landed my new clients.”

No part of this book may be reproduced, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, including photocopying, recording, or other electronic or mechanical methods, without the prior written permission of the author, except in the case of brief quotations used in critical reviews and certain other noncommercial uses permitted by copyright law. Chapter 34–Kaiser 35. Chapter 35–Jericho 36. Epilogue OceanofPDF.com Synopsis Jericho Haze has spent her life learning how to survive without roots. As an orphan, she’s mastered the art of detachment. Never staying too long, never needing too much, and never expecting anyone to stay.

The only constant she’s ever allowed herself to have is Kaiser, her best friend and the one person who has always felt like home. Their bond is effortless, unshakable, and carefully defined. Untouched by the truth that they both refuse to name. Kaiser Carrington has built his life on the foundation of control.

Control of his career, his responsibilities, and most importantly, his emotions. Loving Jericho has never been the problem. Pretending he doesn’t is. For years, they’ve danced around the tension and fear of ruining the one thing they can’t afford to lose: each other. Until Jericho asks for the one thing that guaranteed to change everything. A baby. Not love.

Not a relationship. Just a child. What starts as a logical, emotionless arrangement quickly unravels into something far more complicated. Lines blur. Boundaries dissolve. And the feelings they’ve fought so hard to suppress refuse to stay buried when faced with the intimacy of creating a life together.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
