Instead, he lit another cigarette. He was almost sick of the things. His fingers were yellowed with tar. The stale scent hung thicker on his clothes than it ever had. But God, he needed some comfort now more than ever. Two cigarettes later, Oakwood Baptist crested into view. He slowed quickly, cutting his headlights. Squinting through the windshield, he gleaned that the parsonage lights were off. That brought him a modicum of comfort, but he still pulled the car to the side of the road, parking under the cover of the trees.

He slipped out and locked the doors, then began the trek up to the church. Every time he dared to glance at the parsonage, he imagined the reverend slamming the screen door open and charging at him. His fears never materialized, though, and after a moment of walking, he reached the church. Another glance told him that there was still no sign of life from the parsonage. Not even a sly finger peeling down a single-blind from the window to reveal a probing eye.

Mike hurried up the steps and pushed against the door. It didn’t give. Locked. Damn it. That confirmed Mike’s suspicions that Reverend Victor was being more cautious this time around. Just go home, a little voice in the back of his head told him. Mike desperately wanted to listen to it. But he couldn’t. He had to get proof. Mike slunk around the side of the church. He had to squint in the pale moonlight and run his fingers along the rough side of the church just to have a sense of direction.

He kept his ears open, half expecting to hear the reverend’s southern voice behind him at any moment.

No part of this publication may be reproduced, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, including photocopying, recording, or other electronic or mechanical methods, without the prior written permission of the publisher, except as permitted by U.S. copyright law. At the very least, the pool of sour milk would have smelled much better than the church. Mike stood a good twenty feet away from the building—pacing between the cars in the parking lot. Neither the distance nor the harsh odor of his cigarette could cover the abhorrent stench pulsing from the small, rickety building.

It came in droves. Mike would almost get a breath of fresh air—a hint of fresh grass, cool breeze, and Pall Malls—but by the time he fully inhaled, the rotten stench of the church would come crashing back into his senses. Oakwood Baptist had, unfortunately, gone bad. Rotten like a turkey sandwich forgotten in a schoolboy’s lunchbox. Mike supposed it had begun in April when Reverend Joe Mitchell—who had pastored Oakwood Baptist for twenty-four years—had been caught with his hands down the Kimball boy’s pants.

The pastor molesting a six- year-old was certainly enough to cause a church to go bad, but Mike thought they still might have been able to salvage the church at that point. They’d have to cut off the moldy piece—and they did.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
