From the more passive Louisa would request the committed relationship; incapable of actual refusal, they would mumble, misunderstand or disappear, leaving her furiously condemning another dickhead who had wasted valuable months of her life. When Jane considered leaving Michael, as she did much more often than she admitted to anyone, the vision of a future full of Antonys deterred her.<\/p>\n

\u2018Was this room always the kitchen?\u2019 Louisa was checking out the batterie de cuisine displayed on hooks and shelves, keeping an eye on the poaching liquor in the fish kettle as it approached simmering point. She and Jane were in purist agreement about salmon. The ideal method was to take the pot off the stove as the liquid came to boiling point and leave the fish to cook slowly in the residual heat, then cool overnight before serving in all its moist, pink, meaty splendour.<\/p>\n

\u2018Oh yes. All fitted out with one of those huge electric stainless steel ranges the French always have. The builders thought I was mad when I threw it out and put this old thing in.\u2019 Jane had brought from England a castiron stove with three ovens and blue-and-white tiles, originally intended to burn coal and now skilfully adapted for bottled gas. \u2018The building inspector was all ready to condemn it, but Michael had a drink with him and won him over somehow.<\/p>\n

Shall we shell the peas?\u2019 \u2018So Michael is some use around the house.\u2019 \u2018I couldn\u2019t possibly live like this on my own money, Louisa.\u2019 \u2018Yes you could, you earn enough now, surely?\u2019 \u2018Well \u2026\u2019 Jane paused in the act of clearing bowls from the long oak table to make space for the work ahead. \u2018I don\u2019t know. The latest, Wild Weekend explores the tensions in a Suffolk village in homage to Oliver Goldmsith\u2019s She Stoops to Conquer. To explore suburban living, she created the community of Westwick and explored mid- life manners in Mr Fabulous And Friends, and the environmental implications of urbanisation in Getting Home.<\/p>\n

She has often juxtaposed historical and contemporary settings, notably eighteenth century Spain in Sunset, pre-revolutionary St Petersburg in White Ice and Malaysia in the time of World War II in Pearls.
