My lips curved into a smile into his shoulder. \u201cI\u2019ve never relaxed in my life so I wouldn\u2019t know what it feels like. I think this has to be pretty close. Are you relaxing? I\u2019d hate to ruin your vacation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nik\u2019s hands splayed across my lower back, warm against the chill of the water. \u201cI\u2019ve come to see the benefits of keeping you around.\u201d I nipped at his neck. \u201cI\u2019m beginning to see the benefits of vaca- tioning with\u2026 What do I call you? We\u2019re supposed to set off a chain of events that re- sets the clock.\u201d \u201cThe apocalypse.\u201d \u201cIf it goes through, our souls return to the seals. Could be thou- sands of years before we release again.<\/p>\n

Could be never. It\u2019s not fun behind those walls.\u201d To demonstrate how much fun we could have, he kissed me again. With a sound of appreciation, I pulled back. \u201cSo you\u2019re all out here trying to have as much fun as possible before that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some deluded part of my Emma brain reassures the rest of my neurons that this has to be a temporary working condi- tion. It will get better. Someone will notice that you\u2019re working your- self to the bone and offer you the lifeline you so desperately need but refuse to ask for.<\/p>\n

Call it stubbornness. Call it stupidity. Call it the shit work expec- tations for a thirty-one-year-old in corporate America. Whatever the diagnosis, I spent the first ten minutes of each working day as I did every other; Crying through a panic attack in the darkest corner of the parking garage after parking. I can scream-cry that I quit in my car all I want. I think it works the urge out of my system.<\/p>\n

As tears streamed down my face, I banged on my steering wheel and wondered why I\u2019d been so stupid to accept this position.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
