Even in the more forgiving light of the entrance hall, the sweaty sheen from earlier has remained, and I think he knows it, because he lifts up an arm and uses it to mop at his brow. \u201cSeth?\u201d I pull my eyes away from his glistening forehead and see Gen \u2013 who, unsurprisingly, isn\u2019t sporting one of her own. Her blunt hair has been pulled back with a claw clip and she\u2019s changed from her white cotton dress into a pair of heather-grey jogging bottoms, paired with a black bra top.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, God,\u201d says Seth, as if his thoughts have forced their way out of his mouth. \u201cIt\u2019s you.\u201d He suddenly becomes very aware of his paper cup, waving it around as he searches for somewhere to dispose of it. I offer out a hand, like a mum with a sweet-wrapper-discarding toddler. \u201cOf course it\u2019s me,\u201d says Gen, her forehead crumpling slightly. \u201cYou knew I was performing tonight. What are you doing here? Why are you dressed like a funeral director?\u201d Seth ignores the second question and takes one step closer to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur friend Lyndsey\u2014\u201d \u201cLucy,\u201d I say, cutting across him. He waves a hand. \u201cLucy. Our good friend Lucy was performing, so we wanted to come along and support, didn\u2019t we? Show some school spirit.\u201d Gen makes a questioning sound and narrows her eyes. \u201cThat\u2019s right \u2026 pookie,\u201d I say, grabbing the crook of his arm like he\u2019s an old lady I\u2019m helping into a car.<\/p>\n

Why I opt for pookie, I have no idea, and I\u2019m guessing Seth doesn\u2019t either, because he flashes a pained look in my direction and simply mouths, No. \u201cGreaaaat,\u201d says Gen, stretching the word out like it\u2019s the first time she\u2019s ever used it. She turns to look at Seth, twisting a gold hoop between finger and thumb.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeth, are you doing OK? After \u2026 everything. You seem a little frantic.\u201d She\u2019s right \u2013 he does. I mean, Seth\u2019s always a little frantic, but after the way he acted when he met Freddie in the cafe, I\u2019d expected a direct repeat for Gen. Hair twizzling, low-murmuring, all-the-time-in-the-world energy. This is the total opposite. This is knee-tapping, hands-shaking, teeth- chattering panic. \u201cFrantic?\u201d He rests a hand on my shoulder. \u201cI\u2019m alive with the glory of love, actually. I\u2019m amped. I\u2019m flourishing.\u201d Gen puts an unconvinced hand on an unconvinced hip and scrutinizes him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re flourishing?\u201d \u201cOf course. If you hadn\u2019t ended things with me, I\u2019d never have met my Harley.\u201d Gen flits her full attention to me now; her razor-sharp jawbone rotates back in my direction and her eyes scan me up and down. I don\u2019t know what to do or say about this, so I offer her an awkward little bow, like a medieval jester, and immediately regret my decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, Vie, you want a drink?\u201d says a deep voice behind us.<\/p>\n
