The problem results when indoctrination of Christian people has been done in a manner that alienates Natives from themselves and causes suffering. I do not believe that Christ would have engaged in this type of oppressive behavior. Not for Beginners It is important to reiterate that these interventions are of an advanced nature simply because the therapist is expected to be well versed in both Western and Traditional Native practices.

This requires a great amount of study, practice, and dedication that usually goes beyond the requirements of most graduate institutions. I caution the beginning therapist to be careful and to seek adequate supervision in attempting these liberation therapy practices. If appropriate supervision is not available by either a hybrid-trained Western therapist or a Traditional Healer, do not attempt these interventions.

I advise therapists to stay with their training and what is familiar. More will be said on supervision and some of the pitfalls in Chapter 9 on clinical supervision. Due to the soul wounding that occurred over generations, many of the patients that present for help at clinics in Indian country are suffering with soul sadness or depression. During the time of the wounding process, our ancestors did not have the time to grieve or to heal from the ongoing wounding.

The pain became repressed and regressed into the “black world” or the unconscious. Some of the anesthetizing behaviors used to cope with this pain were discussed in the previous chapter. Unresolved grief that has been passed on to the present generation is experienced as ongoing fear and sadness or, as our profession defines it, as anxiety and depression. The movement of grief from one generation to the next can be understood within the historical trauma paradigm described in the first two chapters of this book.

Many patients express that there is a pain in their heart that will not go away, and the pain has been there as long as they can remember. There is also an ongoing sense of dread that things will continue to go badly and a pervasive sense of helplessness for many individuals, families, and communities. Somatic Complications The clinical picture is usually complicated by the fact that the patient is seeking to alleviate suffering by the use of alcohol or other substances. Many of our health systems do not address underlying issues of substance abuse, and the help given merely makes the patient dependent on medical interventions.

Published by Teachers College Press, 1234 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10027 Copyright © 2019 by Teachers College, Columbia University Cover design by Jeremy Fink.
