Speaking soothing words to her destrier, Evangelus steered the animal toward a drier patch of ground and kicked her heels, encouraging the powerful horse to climb the steep hill. At the top, her view across the fen was barely any clearer than from the marshes below, but at least she was no longer mired in mud and festering bog water.<\/p>\n

The stink of the place clung to her nose and left a bitter taste on her tongue. Why any pariah would choose to flee their enforced exile in the Penitent Mountains to scratch out an existence here was a mystery to her.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
