Minna had a low, nervous voice; Sari startled me with her loud, piercing tones. I was already grumpy, and hearing Sari\u2019s voice didn\u2019t do much to raise my spirits. I\u2019ve always despised people with ugly voices. Tall and thin with sharp features and short-cropped hair, Sari\u2019s jagged looks fit her voice. Nearsighted eyes darted restlessly behind stylish glasses. \u201cIs it true that Kimmo murdered Armi?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sari practically yelled as I joined them at their table. \u201cThe police believe so,\u201d I replied quietly and then rehearsed my increasingly tiresome account of events so far. \u201cI was hoping you two might be able to suggest other possibilities. What was your impression of Armi and Kimmo\u2019s relationship? Did Armi say anything out of the ordinary recently? I\u2019m going to get a cup of tea, and then we can talk. \u201cI could really use some ice cream, but I don\u2019t know if I can right now since Armi\u2026\u201d Sari said, her voice now a whine. \u201cArmi wouldn\u2019t mind,\u201d Minna said. She was short, with soft curves and dark curls. Under normal circumstances, she probably looked like a Lappish doll with those round eyes and red cheeks, but shock had sucked all of the joy out of her. Sari was still at the counter dithering over what flavor of ice cream to choose when I returned to the window table.<\/p>\n

Minna blew her nose into a handkerchief and then quickly said, \u201cI don\u2019t get Sari. Armi and Sari were in the same classes all through elementary school. But it\u2019s almost like she\u2019s enjoying this.\u201d Sari returned to the table. \u201cI got vanilla and rum raisin,\u201d she announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cArmi liked rum raisin with strawberry. Strange combination, don\u2019t you think? The last time I saw Armi was a week ago when she was over at my place. I live just north of the sports park in those new buildings. But I called her on Saturday.<\/p>\n
