Air is getting scarce. I need to get away, but I can\u2019t run. I sink to my knees. There is so much pain I want to scream. And then there is her face in front of me. She grasps my face. \u201cSlow and steady breaths,\u201d she says. \u201cFollow my lead.\u201d And she breathes in deep through the nose, out through the mouth. \u201cIn,\u201d she says with the next inhale. \u201cAnd out.\u201d I do as she says. \u201cIn. And out.\u201d I close my eyes, focusing on her words.<\/p>\n

The sound of her voice and breaths guiding me. My skin tingles, but her touch calms me. \u201cIn. And out.\u201d \u201cIn. And out.\u201d \u201cIn. And out.\u201d Finally, my breathing calms. A shudder runs through my entire body. I have to cry. I haven\u2019t cried much over the years, and right now, all those years are catching up with me.<\/p>\n

I cry for all the years I have lost. For all the times I had to put myself behind other people\u2019s orders. For all I had to become what I was not. \u201cSay it out loud,\u201d she says. I look at her with my blurry vision and burning eyes. \u201cSay it,\u201d she says again, still grasping my face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t,\u201d I whisper. \u201cWhy?\u201d \u201cBecause I\u2019d have to acknowledge that he still has power over me,\u201d I say in a cold and detached voice. \u201cBecause he has. He has as long as you decide he hasn\u2019t.\u201d The tears stop and dry on my cheeks as I distance myself from my memories. \u201cEverything alright in there?\u201d asks someone from outside the door. \u201cYes, sorry, I just hit my head slightly. We\u2019ll be right back,\u201d Jane calls behind her and lets go of me. I stare at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou lied,\u201d I say. \u201cLearned from the best, didn\u2019t I?\u201d A weak smile hushes over my face, and she brushes back a strand of my hair. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to protect me,\u201d she says, and it is the first time I truly realize how much she knows about me already, how good she is in her profession. \u201cCome on, let\u2019s get you back to presentable and join them before anyone storms in here.\u201d We get up, and I feel jittery for a second.<\/p>\n

I splash some water on my face and get makeup, eyeliner, and mascara from my purse. Putting on the makeup is like a mask shielding me. \u201cAll done?\u201d<\/p>\n
