She prayed more and she knew Wickham was getting impatient. To distract him, she looked towards her right and her heart beat. There was another exit door and she knew the servants normally would go to and fro from there.

But how was she going to get over there was the real question. Goodness help her as she tried to make this move but she knew Wickham was sharp and with those that weapon on his belt, she knew she wouldn’t be able to get far. Then when she thought she could take a step towards the right, Wickham heard Mrs. Reynolds pound on the door. Her voice began to ask. “Mrs. Darcy?! Open up or I will ask the butler to break it down!”

“Get this over with, would you, Charles?” Wickham asked and as Lizzy watched, Wickham motioned for Charles to do something about the house keeper. Lizzy, to her horror, watched as Charles reached towards his own belt and then he drew out his own gun. Her prayers increased and she inwardly screamed; how dare he do this to a lady he knew?

Her temper flared and she turned to Wickham but when he glared at her, Lizzy felt herself freeze and the baby did too. How dare he?! “Where is Fitzwilliam when I need him?” Lizzy thought but she didn’t dare voice this aloud. Instead, she kept her eyes on Wickham as he watched as Charles took out the gun.

She noticed, out of the corner of her eye, a glass goblet not too far from her reach. Her prayers increased more as she used her eyes to look at what Charles was doing; though she didn’t to watch herself. Then before she could do or say something, she heard a shot fire and the voice of Mrs. Reynolds was heard; it echoed within the manor of Pemberley, mixed with the laughed of George Wickham.

Lizzy felt how the baby and her both still more when Wickham’s laugh made chill run down her spine as Wickham wickedly laughed. But then his laughs stopped when Lizzy heard him ask. “You fired at the ceiling?!” OceanofPDF.com Chapter Two London, 1820. Darcy was with the constable. He had his hands behind his back as he paced. The constable watched as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy did this.

This wasn’t something he was accustomed to and for a man like Mr. Darcy – this was not typical for him. “Mr. Darcy? From what we’ve seen, we’ve tracked Wickham clear to London. You said the last time you saw Charles Bingely was when the two of you were venturing from Deben shire and then to here, correct?” “Yes; that is right.” Mr. Darcy responded.

His heart beat and he offered a prayer for guidance.

She watched as the door opened before a cloaked figure stood in the doorway. Part of her wondered if any of the other servants were around. But when she peered around, none of them were in sight; even Mrs. Reynolds had left. “Mrs. Darcy.” The man spoke and Lizzy thought she had heard his voice before. She blinked before she took a step forward; she then looked at the gentleman before she answered.

“Mr. Charles Bingely?” The tall figure entered and when Lizzy saw him, her heart beat. Her unborn baby was inside and they stilled when Mr. Charles Bingely entered. He was wearing the cape and his face was covered; part of Lizzy wondered if he was trying to hide form someone. She wasn’t certain; instead, she waited to know what was going to happen next.

Chapter One Pemberley, 1820. The cloaked figure entered and stood in the parlor. Lizzy felt how the eerie feeling of suspense was there. But she prayed that she would know what to do; goodness… where was Fitzwilliam when she needed him? Let alone whatever happened with the other servants?

The creaking noise of the passage way echoed. Lizzy thought she could hear the sounds of someone moaning within and she hoped that she was only in a night mare. Yes; where was Mr. Darcy when she needed her husband? Especially right now? The cloaked figure, who had the voice of Charles Bingely, didn’t move for a moment. Again, Lizzy felt her unborn baby still inside her.

Her heart was touched when she felt this; and this brought back the reality that she and Fitzwilliam and she had struggled to conceive. Her prayers increased when she hoped that the baby hadn’t… At that moment, there was another noise from behind and both she and the cloaked figure looked behind Lizzy towards the doors. “Mrs. Darcy! Whatever is going on in there?!” It was the voice of Mrs. Reynolds.

She sounded as if she knew something wasn’t right and Lizzy’s heart leapt inside. Her prayer had been answered! She thanked Our Lord but just when she was about to turn to open the door, a hand was placed on her shoulder. “No, Mrs. Darcy. I would not recommend that.” The voice of the cloaked figure said. In his manner, there was a warning and when Lizzy turned around, she looked right into his eyes. They were covered by a mask and Lizzy had trouble seeing if he was Charles Bingely or not.

Then the voice form the house keeper got louder. “Mrs. Darcy?! I am serious! Whatever is going on in there?!” Lizzy wanted to move but then the masked stranger motioned with his other hand to remain quiet.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
