Picker would know it. \u201cWhat are you doing here, sarge?\u201d The guard looked from one to the other. \u201cSo you do know this man?\u201d \u201cFor longer than I cares to say, sergeant,\u201d Picker confirmed. \u201cOn my life, you can trust him not to steal anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the north came a huge blast of sound, rolling through the evening sky like a thunderclap that seemed to go on and on. Tied to the back of the wagon, Picker\u2019s grey horse ran back to the end of its tether rope. The trumpeter quickly stepped across to soothe the frightened animal. The sergeant of the guard automatically tugged the musket sling from his shoulder, \u201cBloody hell!\u201d<\/p>\n

The thunder slowly died, replaced by a murmur. \u201cWhat the hell\u2019s going on over there?\u201d Lock wondered aloud. The three men stood quiet, listening, Picker\u2019s horse a little more settled but still uneasy. \u201cSomething\u2019s happening,\u201d the trumpeter said, \u201che can hear it.\u201d \u201cNot an attack,\u201d Lock cupped a hand behind one ear. \u201cThere\u2019d be more musketry.\u201d \u201cSounds like east of town,\u201d the sergeant-guard still had his ears pricked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWasn\u2019t the Spanish posted there?\u201d Lock did not know, but it seemed Picker was better informed. \u201cMajor Killen told me the general had them form there this afternoon, in the olive groves,\u201d he said. \u201cAmongst the ditches and walls. Easier to defend, he said.\u201d That would make sense, Lock thought.<\/p>\n

Maybe Wellesley did not entirely trust his allies to hold firm if they were attacked out in the open. The murmur grew. \u201cWhat the hell is that blasted noise?\u201d The sergeant of the guard was still trying to place it when the first Spanish troops appeared from the darkness. Dishevelled, weaponless, panting as if trying to escape something. Picker shouted at one who ignored him to run on, but then another stopped to take a breather.<\/p>\n

\u201cLos Franceses!\u201d \u201cCrap,\u201d the sergeant-guard said. \u201cI\u2019ll need to warn my men.\u201d He darted away, yelling, \u201cStand to arms!\u201d Lock turned to Picker, \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d \u201cThe major wanted fresh gloves. You?\u201d Lock showed him the sword, \u201cI need to hide this.\u201d \u201cWhy?\u201d Picker stared at it in the creeping darkness. \u201cLooks just an old, rusty sabre, to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
