It\u2019s been a while since I\u2019ve visited the city,\u201d he shrugged. I followed his directions, taking the right when more police sirens sounded. \u201cThey know we\u2019re in the city now. It\u2019ll be much harder to lose them,\u201d Mr. Tenner said. \u201cHere! Pull over here!\u201d I skidded the car to a stop, the five of us all jumping out. \u201cPut on these,\u201d Alex said, stuffing hoodies into her dad, Jack, and Sam\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou all look like you just came from prison.\u201d \u201cFollow me,\u201d Mr. Tenner said, moving swiftly down a back alley. We followed as he reached a door, swinging it open and whispering, \u201cAvert your eyes, kids,\u201d before walking inside the building. We filed in after him, walking through a seedy club with provocative dancers. \u201cEyes up front, Jessie,\u201d Alex commanded.<\/p>\n

Her dad chuckled. \u201cThrough here!\u201d he whispered, ushering us through another door leading into a new alley. \u201cWhere the hell are we going?\u201d I asked. Mr. Tenner led us back out onto the street, running across it as sirens still sounded close, and heading into an underground garage. \u201cJust as I left it,\u201d Mr. Tenner smiled.<\/p>\n

He ran up to a white BMW, the kind I could maybe afford if I didn\u2019t eat for a decade or two. \u201cWe\u2019re supposed to be laying low, dad,\u201d Alex hissed. \u201cWe are. You kids have a lot to learn,\u201d he chuckled, reaching up and taking a key from the top of a pipe hanging off the ceiling. He climbed into the driver\u2019s seat, Sam entering the passenger\u2019s. Alex, Jack, and I squished into the back. The car\u2019s dashboard was more advanced than Sing Sing.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did no one realize this was sitting here for almost two years?\u201d Alex asked. \u201cMoney\u2019s a useful incentive,\u201d her dad responded, putting the car in reverse and exiting the garage. \u201cOh, it\u2019s nice to be back behind the wheel.\u201d \u201cSorry, Mr. Tenner, but how many cars like this do you have around the city?\u201d Sam asked. \u201cNew York? Seven others. And don\u2019t call me Mr. Tenner, Wes is fine.\u201d \u201cWell, Wes,\u201d I began.<\/p>\n

Now, I have already explained everything up to this point of my story, but I get not everyone can be bothered to go revisit it, so let me give you the rundown: My father and I went skydiving, but his chute didn\u2019t open when he pulled the ripcord. He died. It messed me up pretty bad. So bad, in fact, that I developed a, what I would say understandable, but some are calling irrational, fear of heights. Every time I was a foot off the ground, I\u2019d be fighting back a panic attack.<\/p>\n

Then, six months later, my friends and I were at a pier, when I was pushed off. I was absolutely terrified as I fell, when unexplainably, I stopped. I could fly. Then a military guy I call \u201cCrew Cut\u201d (because he has a crew cut; see, I can be creative) found out about my power and kidnapped me. He took me to an \u201cAcademy\u201d, where I quickly found out there were others like me, all with powers that somehow reminded them of the most traumatic experience of their life.<\/p>\n

Apart from the fact that we were kidnapped and forced to use the powers that we hate, the Academy was messed up. They pitted us against each other in barbaric games, a term which I use loosely, and they would beat up kids for just sneaking out at night. Like, break their bones. While at the Academy, I had these cryptic dreams that told me to \u201cjoin the four\u201d and \u201cfind the list\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
