No, that was something else entirely. There on the table lay a large piece of brown parchment covered in stains and scrawled writing with several schematics. It was written in Yjorik, which was much easier to listen to than actually read without her glasses, but she could make out several words like weapon, plans, and military. A small commotion sounded from outside, jarring her to action. She grabbed the plans, folding them up as tightly as they could be compressed and then shoving it into the front of her dress.

Without another lost second, Seren ran out of the longhouse only to collide with a fully dressed Amir, who caught her before she could fall. “What were you thinking? There could have been an enemy soldier in there! We’ve lost precious time.” “I’m sorry, I saw—” “Saw what?”

Amir demanded, voice harsher than he’d ever addressed her before. Back in the Sun Kingdom, Seren was used to being addressed in a certain way, and even all her time with the abuse of the Yjorik didn’t make her ready for someone from the “before” time to yell at her like she was common. Just how sheltered had she been while thinking that she was so tough? “What could be so important that you saw to make you run off?

You know what, it doesn’t matter. We need to go!” She didn’t bother arguing with him. She wasn’t quite sure how to explain what she saw or if she even saw it at all. She was pretty battered, after all, between being beaten, strangled, and otherwise attacked. Maybe she had imagined it all. So Seren nodded and hurriedly crawled into the back, her mind still whirring.

That seemed to pretty much be her permanent state of late. “You alright?” Kashir whispered, worry clear across his features as Amir pulled the cover over them, shrouding them in darkness. “As alright as I can be while we’re in here. But I just want to get out. Take me home, please, Kashir. Take me home.”

His hand snaked toward her, as close as they could get considering how they were wedged into different gaps in the grain.

Except for review quotes, this book may not be reproduced, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher. The sounds had an unnatural sort of reverberance to them as they echoed through the air of the woodlands surrounding him, spurring his feet to move faster.

Twigs and leaves from his sparse moments of slumber in the trees stuck every which way, occasionally falling from his locks like dandelion tufts as he sprinted, trying to find another place to hide. Though Rasheen was persistent in her pursuit of him, Kashir was as determined not to get caught—his thin frame making it easy to tuck himself into small crevices and shrubs that she couldn’t see from the air. It was damp, it was uncomfortable, it was terrifying even though he knew Rasheen wouldn’t hurt him, but none of that mattered.

Rasheen had refused to help Seren when she had fallen, refused to help him go back and find her. But now here she was, searching for him. And for what? To snatch him up and fly away? He couldn’t afford to be carted back to the castle, not with Seren’s life on the line.

Two nights. It had been two nights since he had been out of the comfort of his plush royal bed, searching desperately for his green-thumbed friend. Whenever he was able to close his eyes, his body draped in the thick branches of the trees, the events of that night would play over and over again in his mind. Seren scrambling for a hold, blood dripping down her fingers and wrists.

Seren letting out a sharp cry as he looked down to see her lose the last of her grip. Seren falling, her eyes wide and fixed on him, growing ever smaller as Rasheen rushed away. The solid set to Rasheen’s muscles as she refused to turn.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
