On 20 April Lippert’s forces established contact with elements of the 214th Infantry Division near Zablocie, Poland, and fighting continued for the next few days. On 25 April his battle group was disbanded and the fighting was over.

His forces had captured and destroyed most of the enemy forces, which included taking 466 prisoners, capturing twenty-six artillery guns, nineteen mortars, sixty-nine machine guns,202 horse-drawn wagons, a large amount of ammunition and a field hospital. Lippert gave up his command in late July 1944 and entered the Reserves. From 16 October he took over the leadership of the 5th Panzer Division. From November his command took part in the defensive battle of East Prussia and in January 1945 Lippert was promoted to Generalmajor.

He saw brief action near Königsberg before becoming ill. He was evacuated out of the main area but was captured by US soldiers and seriously wounded, and as a result he died on 1 April 1945. Gustav-Adolf von NOSTITZ-WALLWITZ Generalmajor * 11 July 1898, Oschatz, Saxony + 31 May 1945, Rögen near Eckernförde Gustav-Adolf von Nostitz-Wallwitz entered the Army with Field Artillery Regiment 12 in August 1917 and stayed in the service after the war.

From October 1923 he served with Artillery Regiment 4 in Dresden and was promoted to Hauptmann in June 1933, when he attended the Cavalry School in Hannover. In October 1936 he was battalion commander with Artillery Regiment 22 and at the start of the Second World War he was serving as battalion commander with Artillery Regiment 216 with the rank of Major. He later served with the 1st Cavalry Division from late 1940 and was then assigned to the 24th Panzer Division in February 1942 with the rank of Oberst.

Knight’s Cross: Awarded on 12 June 1944 as Oberst and Commander of Panzer Artillery Regiment 89 while attached to the 24th Panzer Division for actions during the heavy fighting with Soviet troops in south Ukraine. Nostitz-Wallwitz attended a Panzer Officer Course and then the 11th Divisional Leaders’ Course in Hirschberg from May 1944. From September he took over the leadership of the 2nd Panzer Division.

At this time the division had been decimated during the Battle of Normandy in June and it took part in the unsuccessful counterattack at Mortain in August. However, with only twenty-five tanks left, it was surrounded at Falaise.

The right of Jeremy Dixon to be identified as Author of this Work has been asserted by him in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.
