And it isn\u2019t as soon as, it\u2019s if I let you go.\u201d Oliver searched his mind, asking for images that would show him what would happen. They came, sharp, quick. He\u2019ll let us go. He\u2019s The Boss\u2026 Relief swarmed through him, spiders breaking out of a nest, but again he made sure his features showed nothing but impassiveness. Footsteps clattered, two sets Oliver thought, then came to a stop. He didn\u2019t switch his mind to see who they belonged to, just concentrated on The Boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeems they\u2019re telling the truth,\u201d Milton said. \u201cRooster was surprised by the bucket donation coming from English people.\u201d \u201cHe would say that,\u201d The Boss sneered. \u201cMy contact said they don\u2019t have any Brits on their books, that hearing about people from the UK finding the body was also a surprise.\u201d Milton sniffed. Oliver sensed Dewain stiffening at that, Oliver\u2019s recent reminder about Dewain sniffing still fresh in his mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou believe him?\u201d The Boss asked. Dewain laughed. \u201cI don\u2019t believe no one, man.\u201d \u201cI do,\u201d Milton said. \u201cI think these two are telling the truth.\u201d \u201cOnly because of that witchy shit in the jail,\u201d Dewain said. \u201cThe stuff that one said to me. Whooee.\u201d \u201cWhat stuff?\u201d The Boss demanded. \u201cHe talked with my grandmother\u2019s voice and said shit she\u2019d said, mentioned things only I would know.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s special.\u201d \u201cWhat, you?\u201d The Boss kicked Oliver\u2019s foot. Do I admit it? Shit, help me, someone\u2026 \u201cSeems you got the gift,\u201d The Boss said. \u201cAnd that means I really do have to let you go. People with the gift don\u2019t usually do bad things, in my experience.<\/p>\n

And I was brought up to respect the gift.\u201d Thank you\u2026 \u201cYou just got unfortunate, eh? Got mixed up in something you shouldn\u2019t. I got to go with my gut and release you. But not before morning. Just in case my gut is wrong and I get different information overnight. Whether you got the gift or not, it might not be the good gift, see?<\/p>\n

For all I know, you could be one of them dark arts witches.\u201d He cleared his throat. \u201cYou understand the way I do business, eh?\u201d The Boss kicked Langham\u2019s shoe. \u201cYes,\u201d Langham said. \u201cI see it all the time in my line of work.\u201d The Boss let out a long whoop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just bet you do. So, no hard feelings, eh?\u201d \u201cAbsolutely none at all,\u201d Langham said.<\/p>\n
